I imagine that the legalization will happen eventually. The social stigma surrounding pot has been waning for years.
It failed in California because people aren't quite ready yet, but more states will try and it will ultimately pass somewhere, and once we have that precedent, other states will follow.

A majority of Californians identify themselves as moderates, not liberals.
If it's going to happen, it will probably happen first in Rhode Island or Massachusetts.

I think connecticut is up there on the list of most liberal states as well.
