In a sense. The nerd hobbies of things like video games and comic books are seeing more widespread acceptance, and attracting a much wider range of people.

Though just being a nerd won't make you cooler in itself.

My extensive knowledge of the Star Trek universe has never garnered me anything but weird looks - even from my nerdy friends. Any proficiency with computers or technology just means you're the default guy friends and family call when they want free tech support or someone to hook up their latest doo-dad.

I think nerds are plenty cool, but I don't think the general populace shares my views.
