A customer went to Store A and bought $80 worth of products. He paid with a $100 bill, but the store owner did not have change. The owner went to Store B to break the $100, then returned and gave the customer $20 change. The customer left. The owner of Store B then realized that the $100 bill was counterfeit, so the owner of Store A paid the owner of Store B a real $100 bill to make it right. Overall, how much money (including value of products) did the owner of Store A lose?

Assuming he received real money in exchange for his fake hundred (covering the cost of the item and change paid out) wouldn't he have just lost the $100 he paid to Store B later?
(Although you might be able to argue that the customer wasn't due any change and arrive at a figure of $120? I don't know. I'm still waking up.)

Why is he selling things at cost? How is Shop A even still open?

the answer is 100 dollars, he owed change to the man but he wasn't able to give it back to him, so the store is up 20$ but down the counterfeit 100
