Think of the Empire as the Muslim successor to the Eastern Roman Empire. Both had much of the same territory. In fact, both had the same capital city (Constantinople. Now Instanbul). It was in existence since around 1300 and collapsed sometime in the early 20th century due to, among many reasons, political instability and being defeated in World War I.
