Topic: Why have women been kept down throughout human history?

Any serious student of history knows that it cannot be denied that woman have traditionally been an underclass, without the same rights, privileges, opportunities, etc. as men. I am not arguing that fact. What I am asking, is why this is the case. Some believe it is because men are just naturally domineering, unjust, etc., or that women are naturally inferior, etc. But what do you think?

Because they're physically weaker. Might makes right, and that has historically made them easier to exploit.

But humans are physically weaker than many animals, yet still have used intelligence to tame them. Why have women not used intelligence (which they have in abundance) to overcome men's physical strength?

Bears will still sometimes kill humans despite our ability to outsmart them. Sometimes you can use your intelligence to make might, but sometimes you can't. Laws and rules of civilized society are only as strong as those who obey and enforce them. For example, the constitution is only a piece of paper. It only works because we choose to obey it. If the branches of government collude to ignore it, it does nothing to stop them. If the people try to stop a corrupt government, they only succeed if they have the might to do so, and fail if they don't have the might to do so.
It's basically all an illusion and we're always virtually in a very balanced state of anarchy. If you think about it, there's nothing stopping someone more powerful than you from making you their slave. The only thing stopping them is the might you have, or the might of people willing to protect your rights on your behalf to maintain the illusion of civilization. Since women are physically weaker, they are more easily controlled and exploited.

In my view, it arose out of humankind's more natural behaviour. Back before it became intelligent.
Humans, like many animals, evolved with different gender roles. Each gender evolved to do different things so as to do them better, and that involved the men being stronger and more domineering so as to be better hunters and protectors. And I'm thinking that this sort of behaviour has carried over to more modern human societies, but now said behaviour is pretty much just restrictive and oppressive since we're no longer primitive hunters fighting for survival.
But things have definitely improved, I think. Many societies have become more egalitarian, with women being given more equal opportunities and rights. Obviously there's still problems, but I think it's allright to be optimistic about things.

when we were merely hunter gatherers there is strong evidence to suggest a more matriarchal society. women were practically revered becuase if their reproductive abilities.
probably when we made the switch to agricultural is when patricarchy really took root. people lived longer and work became more higly valued than reproduction. especially once population boomed. males aremore reliable workers because pregnancy can remove a woman from the workforce and actually become a bit of a liability.

Women from the age of Homo sapiens, about 200,000 years ago to currently.

Its a scientific fact that human reproduction will soon be replaced by a machine. (As an option of course)

I really doubt so. You see its in our nature to reproduce. In today's world people criticize parents who have unplanned children but the reality is that they are perhaps the highest contributors
to our society. No matter what alternatives we shall present, our instincts will over come it.
Gender roles are a horrible thing, but it is only so because we face a new brave world. The task is to reinvent gender roles but not abolish them.
