my computer. it's more like a no-guilt pleasure though, but most of my friends and family think i "waste money" on computer stuff. They don't get it, but then i watch them chug along with their terrible user experience and smile knowingly.
but like i get criticism from my friends who have technical jobs. when i upgraded years ago to an i7 with 8 gigs i was told by one friend "you can't stay bleeding edge, don't try" even though an i7 was not bleeding edge and was on sale for a song. And even now that chip is excellent, there's not an upgrade out there that benchmarks more than 30% better for like easily a grand. in some instances the modern chips at the price i paid for the i72600k are basically a side grade, or at best a 10% upgrade. that's just crap, so, turns out i bought a very future proof chip.
Also i just went to 16 gigs of memory which was an eventual planned upgrade anyway, like the new video card (gtx 980) i got a couple of months ago. so pretty much this thing is entirely boss. i see no reason to upgrade until i make a move to ddr4 and at that point i'll be replacing the motherboard and getting a new CPU. by then i'm expecting a much more significant upgrade than 20-30%
So i don't really see myself as over spending or needing to feel guilty about my "toy" but a lot of people see it as a big waste. and i'm not even mentioning the oculus rift or expensive screen or anything like that, just the computer itself they think is over the top, which is odd to me. maybe its that it's sitting over glowing with blue and yellow lights and has, like, huge silent fans and water cooling.
anyway, fuck other people. enjoy your pleasures, don't feel guilty about them, chumps.
