I thought it had finally died, but it was just low on battery.

So I leave it charging over night to my delight it still works, but when I came back it was only 2% charged now 11% charged.

It used to charge so much quicker. It is a Google Nexus 7 first generation.

Did something break¿

Lithium-ion batteries have a useful lifespan of 2-3 years typically. The chemistry inside the battery is unstable and the recharging is based on changing lithium from one compound to another (apologies, it's been a few years since I took college chemistry but Wikipedia explains all). This reaction is not entirely reversible and every charge/discharge cycle more of the lithium ion gets "stuck" in one state or another lessening the capacity. This can happen gradually or suddenly, again it's a very unstable thing after a while. First gen Nexus was 2012 IIRC so you're about due for a battery failure. Every single Li-Ion battery I've owned (in phones, PSP, laptops, iPods) was dead after 2-3 years.

Just be thankful you didn't buy a Tesla or Nissan Leaf.

They tell you that so they can cover their ass on warranty claims made by people who deliberately try to make things die before the warranty expires. If it charges via USB cable, then you can't really do any damage by using a different charger.

Battery replacement looks pretty easy and replacement batteries are relatively cheap.
