A chromebook is okay if you think you will manage having *only* the Chrome web browser. No Microsoft Office. No skype. No nothing besides Chrome, and anything you can find on the Chrome app store.

You can replace ChromeOS with some linux distro. That should get you enough functionality unless you need some horribly specific piece of software for school.

I doubt OP to be capable enough to do this if they cannot even pick out their own laptop. Plus, no MS Office which schools like (and no Libre/OpenOffice still don't suffice, sadly).

Wow, I haven't had a problem lately. They were a little sketchy in the early days, but I actually prefer them over MS Office now.

My college manages to generate spreadsheets that LibreOffice simply cannot render/edit correctly. I'm not sure what they do, but it hapens. Some powerpoints too that get completely messed up.

Trusting OpenOffice not to mangle PowerPoint formats used to be crazy. I wrote the last two talks I had with LibreOffice, and they carried over fine. Spreadsheets, even with multiple sheets and formulas all over the place, have worked just fine for me. I don't know what OP is studying, but my recent (ongoing really) experience with LibreOffice leads me to believe it will probably suffice for school unless they are in some insanely technical field.

It depends on what you mean by "for school". In my college experience, a laptop was neither necessary nor helpful for most classes. I took one to school for a while and mainly ended up messing around and playing games on it. If you have to bring one, the cheapest ultrabook available should suffice.

Until you need to collaborate with other students or teachers who are all using MS Office. They will vehemently hate you when you show up with a chromebook at that point.

It is true that certain MS formatting will not render identically to libreoffice, but if you are already considering a non-Losedows OS then it probably isn't a showstopper.
Surely the education system doesn't require students to purchase proprietary software? Is that even legal?
