Damn, what the hell? The average restaurant serving size in the US is about 3-4 times larger than in China, and I suspect, in most of the world. Why the hell?
briemode !!VcXse1uvL joined in and replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later[^][v]#536,449
It also costs a lot of money and there is an expectation that the guest be able to take home what is not eaten.
And then you are expected to tip. Also the food is not fried in sewer oil.
Thanks.

Go to a local foodcart or something, man.
Not every eatery is a corporate owned chain restaurant.

Even the local ones serve hippo-sized portions. It is ridiculous, unhealthy, and wasteful.

That is not the case. Most people in the world see it as a symptom of mass gluttony and waste. Also, much of the food is not really good: size tries to make up for flavor.

"Kids Menu" is a totally USAmerican thing. In the rest of the world, children eat what the adults eat. Only in the US do children get special "kids food" which consists of processed, chemical-filled, flavorless crap.

Poachers are massacring elephants due to the Chinese obsession with ivory. They'll leave an entire, formerly majestic, elephant carcass behind and only take the tusks. How's that for waste?

The reason why serving sizes are smaller in Asia is because Asians in general tend to be smaller than Europeans/Americans. The bigger the person is naturally (obesity doesn't count as natural) the bigger the portion size has to be for them.

Yeah but you're not in China anymore. I don't know if you're familiar with it, but a kid's menu is the same fare the restaurants serve to adults, but in a smaller portion for a lower price. Maybe that's the problem -- PRChinese restaurants ONLY have the kid's menu.

I know. Look, I'll just drop the kid's menu thing cause you plainly don't understand how this works. Different countries have different traditions when it comes to how food is served. Why not use your Chinese thriftiness skills to eat 1/3 of the meal at the restaurant, take the rest home and eat it for two more meals?

I end up having to do that, of course. I just find it unappetizing to have enough food to feed a hippo heaped onto a plate. Also, the amount of leftovers I have to take home is so much that I could never finish them, and I have to throw them out. Sickening.

And for like $3 which I thought would be a small meal there was laid in front of me about 3lb of chillie-cheese fries

No, not really; serving sizes at most restaurants are perfectly reasonable unless you stumble upon a restaurant in Texas or anywhere where the serving sizes are a part of the place's theme.
The problem is people tend to overindulge and order more plates at once. I never actually heard of that happening at restaurants.
