Internet Relay Chat. It's a network protocol for chat, anyone can run an irc server and anyone can use an irc client to connect to it. There are several big irc networks that anyone can create a channel on, which is what we do. Our channel is ##minichan on the irc.freenode.net server. You can forget all that and just go to https://minichan.org/chat (this can be found under stuff)

Colloquy is what I've heard, but it appears to cost money. I am not an iPhone user though, so no idea. Android has a bunch of free apps that come up when you search irc in the play store.

Thanks! I read that one was the best, but I thought I'd ask before I bought an app. I'll break down and get a nice android phone soon, but in the meantime I'm stuck using an iPhone.

i cant believe people still use irc, everyone just idles there so its totally pointless

in the late 90's with some irc clients they had a pretty neat little quirk in the sense that if you got a netsplit the command window would fill up with a room list of all the rooms hosted on the node, none of them were every registered properly either but it was still cool to poke around with

what is the problem with idling?? that is like the best feature of irc, that you can idle and people wont get buttmad if you're not around. You can read conversation and just participate when you feel like it. It's nice.
