Comparing the Futura Std Bold I found on Adobe.com and the first result on google that let me download it for free (http://www.fontpark.net/en/font/futura-std-bold/) they seem pretty identical. Is that it?

it's not like that. that's cause it's basically stealing. the people who made these movies/songs didn't make them for nothing, they want profit. so yes, it is stealing actually because you don't buy what they produced. you get something that costs lots of money, without paying the person who made that certain product. imagine that you produced a movie with a budget of 100 million dollars and took about a year to produce, and then imagine that everyone watched the movie for free. wouldn't u be pissed off? same goes for software, requires lots of time and time is money. i feel so smart because of u haha

Exactly. There are many free fonts for personal use, I'd just stick with those. I'm not against piracy, but it's just unwise to pirate fonts and publish works with them. Anyone can see what fonts you use, and they know who bought it.

just download open source fonts, you can basically find a proper knockoff of just about anything. unless you're a stickler for very minor detail there's not a font out there you can't find a replica of.
also you can duplicate fonts pretty easily with illustrator or inkscape. are you needing the font for like a whole document or are you building a logo or something?
if you're building logos and only need a few letters rather than pages and pages then you can duplicate fonts and alter them slightly and avoid the whole problem.

Handel Adobe back in 2014 released a lot of open sourced (FREE) fonts that include Sans Serif - perhaps not Exactly what you are looking for but perhaps when free close enough?
And when I submit Futura Std Bold to Google - multiple sites offer it for sale for the same price you found and yet others offer it for free. Took a quick look at the free and hit download and sites say its ready to download in a zip file - No clue what happens if but I also have no need for what might come with it. Worth a look at

Designed by Paul Renner in 1927, Futura is the classic example of a geometric sans serif type. Its original concept was based on the Bauhaus design philosophy that “form follows function.” Futura uses basic geometric proportions with no weight stresses, serifs, or frills, with long ascenders and descenders that give it more elegance than most sans serif typefaces. The wide range of weights plus condensed faces provide a variety of ways to set short text blocks and display copy with a strong, no-nonsense appearance.

I tried the zips, they're knock offs. They're all ever so slightly different.
I eventually torrented the font. I needed that exact font because I'm working with pre-existing assets using that font family.

yup. just import it into inkscape, trace the bitmap into vectors, tweak to make it perfect, and use.
of course you'd need a sample of all letters and in both cases to rebuild the whole thing. and then you can just do the layout by hand one letter at a time.

well, it's a good technique to know how to do in the event you're looking to clone a very rare or non-font lettering, for example replicating vintage letting from old poters or signage or photographs or something like that. i recently basically did that for a "client" who wanted some old artwork cleaned up and digitized and i included all the various lettered logos and slogans as vectors.

Assuming you have a document that you now need to add to. Why didn't you convert the prior part of the doc into one of the free be's - then all additions would look the same.

quick question, just to satisfy my curiosity, are you needing the modularity of the full font family? like are you providing templates or completed works? i'm going to guess that you're creating something in-addition to an already completed work (and therefor need to add new wordage) or you're looking to match an existing design with a unique work of your own and the client provided the font names for you to use? i'm also guessing you're working freelance?
also where will these be displayed, in print, video or online?

and for example here's a logo i made up for a personal projecti sourced this from some Top Gun movie posters. i don't actually have the font and felt it would be faster to just make it, granted it's super simple but i didn't really want to figure out what font to look for, then look for it, then mess with getting it one way or the other. Making it took a lot less time, like an hour. i did a hand sketch, then blocked it out on another layer, made corner masks and applied those, adjusted the proportions and then laid the rest out with a standard font i had.
i realized way too late that i was working at a low resolution so if this one passes muster then i'll rework it in inkscape simply by using this image as a source, lol. i like to save time.

Everyone has a need for some kind of graphic design, but most people can't afford a legit graphic designer or are just way too cheap to do so. so i've been paid to make all kinds of things but it's always like, uh, yeah, i'll do that for $50 and they are like WOW okay!
but somehow recently i picked up many hours worth of work and was paid accordingly, but also the quality had to be top notch and i was like way way outside my comfort zone. i told them that too, but anyway, it all turned out acceptable.
that's my "cool story bro" story about graphic design.

i also sold some "legit art" once that's hanging on someone's wall. and by legit i mean i charged them 1800 dollars for the work. i mean, it's worthless to anyone but the people who bought it, but anyway, i of course had to pay for all the materials and then frame and mount the thing myself (it's actually a collection of dozens of unique paintings that form a larger image once arranged. they range in size from 36x48" sections to 12x12".) so it's not like i cleared a ton of profit. and considering the number of hours i put into it i was paid, like, nothing.

i did it through pure luck and not even wanting to do it. same way i've been offered money to do computer work for people and i've always had to decline things except art because i can usually tell what is in my comfortzone. making a business card logo for my mom's hairstylist? $50
making flyers for various things and i did mostly like small business related things. but i don't try and sell myself as a graphic artist, but people i know that think they know what i'm capable of end up trying to get me to do things a graphic artist should be doing.
also it's not frequent at all, and generally happens when i can't say no cause it's like my mom asking, or my boss or something like that. my boss thinks i'm "techie" and can do anything digital because i showed him how to get songs off of youtube ripped to his phone. and i like playing with graphic design software and have done work related things and that's where the "needs to be professional looking" work came from and i was able to do a lot of the work at home and during work hours and so i was paid regularly and also the "client" paid me a set fee. but also i had to spend a ton of free time on it, which was fine, because i enjoy it up to a point. it was really all more of a favor from my boss to another friendly boss person of another friendly company he's like IRL friends with and he was all, "squeegee could do that for you, look what he did for us," and they were all, "as long as he's cheap and the work is of the highest quality imaginable we'll consider it." not really, but they were pretty hard to please for people i explicitly told i'm merely an amateur. overall it was fun, and i learned a few neat tricks i'll be using again though.
so basically just keep fucking around with stuff and email your mother copies of things you think are cool.
