Here in So Cal - Bit of history
US a few years ago went to war with Mexico to annex Texas. Mexico lost and US ended up with Texas New Mexico and California (eventually)
Very few Italians and Irish here - most are where its currently cold as sin in Boston and New York
Majority of Americans near by speak Spanish, as Spain was the original invader of where I live.
Also you might remember that b4 Irish and Italians came to wot is known as USA currently - It was Brits and Spain and even [Russia (west coast for furs)]
So Brits brought the English to US and then there was some kind of Tea party which is not related to current Tea Party

Good memory.
50% Russian
50% Hungarian
Grandparents were totally Anti the Religion part of their heritage.
Its a good thing I did not learn any Russian from my Grandmother - Not speaking Russian was one of the very best parts of my work in Russia. I got smiles from saying thank you in Russian - Never got it right but wot ever I did say got me a lot of smiles.

Because they assimilated to the English speaking culture and learned the language as one should when one goes to live in another country.

I hear all these liberals griping about people trying to make English the official language and force immigrants to speak English and assimilate. So what? That's what you're supposed to do. Speaking English is (with a few exceptions) already a requirement for citizenship. It already is the official language regardless of who refuses to recognize it and they need to get over this fact.
