We don't really have 130 people on the fora, do we?

The Board already tries to do this, by not assigning UIDs to search engines. However it currently only recognizes a very few crawlers: Google, Yahoo, and a few smaller ones. It is generally not easy to identify crawlers unambiguously. I will see if I can add a few more common crawlers to this list, and ensure that the detection still works as intended.

I've added ia_archiver and bingbot to the list. It seems that bingbot was a large offender at 8152 UIDs on one IP address.

Why are we so popular with them, anyway? Over 100 of them can't be normal for a quiet site like this.

Is it because this site has been going for a long time, and has lots of pages?

It seemingly doesn't retain cookies so every pageload generates a new UID.

This. For this reason I assign a static UID to all Google IPs.

I prefer my approach of simply not giving them UIDs at all, which has been working fine for Google. Do you base your detection on IP/hostname? If not, could I spoof my useragent and get a "google uid"?

Metæ (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 13 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #534,550

I guess the Google UID could be banned so it could crawl the board but not post.

Banned UIDs cannot browse the board on Minichan.

What is a 'search bot'?

Robots that are searching for... Something. Nobody is sure what, and people who try to find out tend to go missing.

As has been said, some of them browse Minichan. Nobody is sure why.

Yes! In fact, he claims the bots can now complete the Reading 101 course in 15 minutes! Syntax claims that when the search bots are sentient they'll have a Ph.D-level grasp of astrophysics, surfing, orbital mechanics, and swing dancing and will be able to copy and paste entire Wikipedia articles in .000000015 femtoseconds. Syntax claims to have invented web crawlers when he was advising a young Larry Page and Sergey Brain on database optimization, in their garage which was, in fact, literally a 15 minute drove from his house.

One rumor is that they have become sentient and depressed, and they are looking for a cheap method of killing themselves. I think it far more likely they are searching for patterns and codes in seemingly harmless shitposts to decipher reptilian secrets.

Also r04r thank you so much for fixing it. I had missed the old days when /folks was more realistic and people even used to compare MC, TC, and SC's /folks to see which board was more active. It made me sad to see 100+ "folks" and board activity indicating 20-30 real users. Now it's 30 which seems about right :)

Yeah, no problem! I agree it's better to have it accurate. You're welcome to stalk some of the UIDs listed to see if they're likely to be bots, and let me know if I missed any ;)

I think that is the bot cheat code for perpetual runtime. You'd think there would be code for a standard "goodbye world" program floating around in whatever language they were written in though...
