Topic: I feel completely empty inside fora.

Metæ started this discussion 11 years ago #40,062

I cut back on drinking almost entirely, and the past two weeks I've been burning 1,000 calories a night on an elliptical machine. My stomach fat has shrank dramatically and I have more energy but mentally I just feel completely empty. Not sad or depressed but just blank and apathetic.

While those are some very good steps, I think it takes more than just physical changes to feel fufilled.

I don't mean to be rude or hurtful with this, but I'm going to guess you're still sort a loner, and all that? That's probably a big part of why you feel empty. If you're willing to take more steps to change, I'd advise you to try and meet some people, make some friends. Maybe you could look up some local groups for interests of yours? Stuff like that.

My sympathies all the same, bud.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Killer Lettuce is right, really. It's difficult sometimes to feel fulfilled. Try developing a hobby or an interest, fill your time with something that develops you as a person, and try to find some people that you feel a connection with. It's hard as hell. But you'll feel the better for it.

Nah. Drugs don't help except in a crisis sort of situation tbh.

!! Oh yeah! Also go get a blood test, see if your levels of everything are normal. And get some vitamin D and iron supplements - most people are deficient, esp. during winter.

Yeah, a new hobby could also help.

I'm sure there are also self-help books for this sort of thing. You might have to dig around a bit to get through all of the chaff, but there's likely some helpful guides somewhere.

We have that Reading Well/Books on Prescription scheme, those books are all very good and chosen by professionals. I'm sure the US has something similar.

That feel
@533,451 (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)
Of course. I've never been able to socialize well in real life. I just don't understand people that well. I don't like going out, ever. Despite a near-decade long drinking career, I've only ever had one drink in a bar my entire life and I hated it.

Drinking was my hobby, but I'm cutting it way back in order to improve my health, which was starting to fail due to obesity, poor diet, heavy drinking, and high blood pressure. Just after a few weeks of barely drinking, I already look years younger.
@533,470 (D)
Nah, it doesn't seem to help in the long run.
@533,473 (swamplights !!0lQNsDoq/)
Never. I have an abundance of body hair, facial hair, I can quickly put on muscle mass in addition to thinning hair (not Reid-stage, but I will need Rogaine soon) so I seem to have decent testosterone. I have not visited a doctor for any reason in four years.
@533,475 (Triptych !!/xkPL9myM)
I have been taking vitamins B and D, and they did help with lack of energy.

They're basically a range of self-help books that are chosen by psychologists and other mental healthcare professionals (IIRC it was ~2 years of deciding before they settled on the current range of books), and GPs/psychs "prescribe" them to you, i.e. recommend that you read them and point you to libraries where they're available (almost all libraries in the UK participate in the scheme).

Damn, that's rather hard to imagine. Have you never gone out drinking even just with family? I think pubs are a bigger part of social life in the UK than the US, but if someone here told me they'd only been to a bar/pub once in that length of time, I'd assume they're teetotal.

God damnit I'm losing my hair too, just a couple years behind you. My hair is thinning, very badly on the the back and top, but the hairline as such hasn't really receded.

We should bond together and have a marathon for the cure. Or something.

Well, that's the sort of thing I meant about reading up on stuff. There will be books out there on learning to socialise better.

I'm not saying you need to become some outgoing, extroverted party person. I just think that making some connections would be a good step in helping you. And it doesn't have to be people who are constantly at bars, either. You can probably find people who prefer more low-key activities also.

I always drink alone. I worry I'd end up making a fool of myself if I drank with others. I would typically consume two 750mL bottles of spirits or a 5L box of wine a week.

Bars are less of a thing for some suburban and rural communities. You have to drive fucking everywhere.

That is a definitely a factor. You can't get properly drunk cause you have to stay sober enough to drive home or pay $$$$$$ for a taxi. And getting a DUI can literally ruin your life.

I get that too when I try to stay sober. It usually goes after a couple of weeks.
