Topic: Life is so sad, isn't it?

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #40,046

Everything dies in the end. Most suffer. What is the point?

Anonymous B joined in and replied with this 11 years ago, 7 minutes later[^] [v] #533,264

There is no point. Looking for one is (ironically) pointless. Just try to enjoy yourself, create another human or two if you're into that and then die peacefully. If you got that down you could start caring about humanity as a whole and try to help reduce the suffering of those who suffer most.

But when someone you love is suffering and/or dying, how can you not just get depressed and kill yourself?

Anonymous D joined in and replied with this 11 years ago, 13 minutes later, 21 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #533,268

The point is to experience emotions. You were lucky enough to have a (mostly) functional body and brain, so make use of your capacities. The world has beautiful places and people in it, so get out to see and experience what you can.

There are wonderfully complex structures and processes within your brain that respond to pleasure in amazing ways.

That is true, but what about when someone you truly love is in the miserable process of dying of cancer? It is hard to enjoy everything, because you feel so much for them, right?

Anonymous D replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 24 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #533,270

Pain, loss, frustration, and failure are emotions that everybody experiences in some capacity. It is wholly valid to just sit with a negative emotion and contemplate it. Tell yourself that you are lucky enough to feel alive enough to experience something shitty. Learn and grow from your pains.

I am sorry for your pains. I have lost family from cancer and it was a long, painful process.

Ask this person what you can do for them. How can you help them to be more comfortable?

My grandmother was more comfortable when provided with ice water. I remember my mom dabbing a wet cloth onto Grandma's dried out lips.

Does this person enjoy being read to? Are they alert enough to talk? You might just hold their hand and promise to regularly visit. If they're in too much pain you can help them advocate for the supervised administration of opioids by their doctor.

Yes, they are being comforted by me and others all the time, but still, life just sucks, you know? Thank you for your compassion.

What she really wanted was ice water for her bong. She would have blazed those dabs too

You're one to talk. For someone who regularly gets his jimmies russled by incels on an obscure message board, you really have a big mouth.

Free speech is about government restraint. Private people are wholly free to discriminate based on others' speech, you fucking retard.

How often does one find it, though? And, can it somehow make up for the heart-rending grief that is most of the time?

I'm on medication. That, and a lot of practice meditating, and coming to terms with my mortality. Like, if I'm going to kill myself tomorrow I might as well try to enjoy myself today, right?

Nope! Doing much better. The method I decided on has a bit of a self-check to it, too. Gotta go out and buy some supplies, take a few days for extraction of the substance, and 3-5 days for it to kick in. That's a lot of commitment, and it's kept me from following through during depressive bouts in the past year or so.

you know ive wondered about this multiple times, like when you jump off a building and hit the ground is death instantaneous? or is there still a period of a second or even a half a second where you are still alive and in a crazy amount of pain, after which you just expire

i know that people who self immolate or die by immolation in the first place, what happens (the cause of death, technically)- is asphyxiation and not "melting to fuck" like most people think, the reason being is because when you're surrounded by fire the fire will actually wick into your lungs and burn off all the oxygen you still have in your body, drowning is also the same way
