they'd probably think the same thing about you if you shared your beliefs with them.

but i agree, beliefs are pretty hard to understand sometimes and frequently in my life not realizing other people don't hold my same beliefs has gotten me into trouble. It took me a long time to figure out that playing christian and just agreeing with them is honestly the path of least resistance, for example.

when i was in college in austin i spent one winter working for the gas utility company turning on people's gas service and lighting pilot lights and stuff. i went on one call and knocked on the door. The lady answered (with the little chain lock still connected) and through the cracked door she said, "Are you a Christian?"
i didn't really "get" the question and i replied, "I'm with the gas company, i'm here to turn on your service,"
and she said, "Are you Christian? Only god fearing Christians are allowed in this house."
i thought about it for a second, was taken aback actually, and finally said, "yes ma'am, i'm catholic."
She didn't say anything, she just shut the door. I thought she was going to undo the cain and let me in, but no. She just shut the door and walked away and then wouldn't answer when i continued to knock.

she didn't even say anything to me, she just left me standing there.

So, i called in to dispatch and told them she wouldn't let me in her house and i guess was refusing service? So dispatch puts in a call to the lady (all the while i'm just standing on her front porch) and i can hear her inside answering the phone. So about 10 minutes had passed since she'd shut the door in my face and i hadn't gotten permission from dispatch to move along to my next job yet, when the fucking police pull up.

And i'm not even thinking it's related. i just notice them, and then they start walking to her front porch and i get a call from dispatch telling me to leave because she's called the police on me!

so the cops come up and ask me what going on, that they got a call that someone was pretending to be a Gas Man and was trying to gain entry into her house and that they'd been asked to leave and were continuing to harass her. So i show them my badge, yes, i'm actually with the gas company

And at this point i'm leveling with the cops, and explain what she did and how she never once spoke to me after i told her i was catholic. I was never asked to leave, and i'm not some heathen devil worshiper pretending to be the gas man so i can corrupt her home or whatever the fuck this lady thought.

Anyway, i'd been told to leave by dispatch, and i told the cops i was merely trying to do the job this lady asked us to come to her house to do! of course they let me leave, but of course gave me a bullshit speech about how to "not harass people."

it. was. fucking. bullshit. but nothing bad happened, just a bunch of stupid shit.
later i talked to dispatch and asked if that job ever got resolved and she said, "yeah, we sent out John "the Baptist" and he got right in!"
