Topic: A question for Matt regarding Asians.

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #39,931

Before you moved to Chinae, did you have trouble telling Asian people apart? Is it easier now that you're surrounded by them?

This is a serious question and I request a serious reply. Thank you.

Well, I have been around lots of Asians throughout my life, so I could tell them apart already. But what is pretty funny now, is that to me, the default "human being" is Chinese. When I see a foreigner, I stare like the Chinese do. If I ever travel to a Western country, it is going to be really weird seeing all the Westerners.

I would not say that I possess native fluency in Chinese yet, but I am certainly conversational, including reading and writing.

We cared for an Asian resident with a thick Dutch accent. She had the dark skin and features of an Island Asian, but with freckles. Her voice was almost comical, and she sounded like that character from the Austin Powers movies. Turns out, she was from Dutch occupied Indonesia.
