Topic: Sharia law and western morality.

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #39,921

Morality is a set of beliefs about right and wrong. Wrong being a believed incorrect way to behave and right being a believed correct way to behave.

Morality changes a lot in history, i think. So i also think that the growing support of sharia law by radicals is very dangerous. They in a way have the
upper hand completely because western people regard morality for what it is, beliefs. But the sharia law supporters believe in objective morality, that is
something is wrong or right regardless of what you believe.

So you can try and make a Islamic extremist drop his beliefs about sharia law but if or if not he believes in it is irrelevant to him. That is not the case
for western people.

Are you that weird guy who stops by every few months to make semi-nonsensical threads about morality?

Dammit. I just bought a whole bucket of moral relativism for my friend's kids to play with. Glad I kept the receipt.

Anyone who argues that its possible to change the way a Muslim, Sharia or Shiite believe/think/morality/

Has failed to study history going back2 610 CE. Each despises the other as immoral with horrid death as the only way to honor Allah.

And anyone who is not one of them is Evil and needs to be sent to a horrid death.

This is a No Win situation, as it has always been and frankly will probably be for eons and eons.

Given Education if not directly from the Koran - its considered blasphemy.

I guess? I dispute that western societies as a whole are morally relativistic, though there is more of it floating around than I like.

Anonymous E replied with this 11 years ago, 6 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #531,576

@531,574 (Syntax)

It can be a no win situation. But something like in terms of evolution it is the morality that protects itself the most.

@previous (Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU)

Why do you suppose there is more of it floating around then what you would like?

If I remember correctly you're the in the running for a PhD in Philosophy.

So how do you deal with the differences in moral judgments across different people and cultures; When a culture is totally immoral?
Of course from their point of view they are the most Moral of all cultures.

I have worked and lived in every single area of North Africa. Have many many friends who are Muslim and that includes all factions (actually that is near impossible because one cannot say that without having known all the tribes and they are almost infinite)

It is easy and welcome to discuss the Koran and even interpretations but impossible to discuss the evolution because that ends up political suicide -

I look at the time line of that religion and given 610 CE vs 2015 - It has evolved in2 more factions and more disarray but actually based on all that has gone b4, the more things have changed the more they remain the same. I just see no evolve Other then a few Muslims that have gone to universities in USA or England/France/Italy and even Turkey - a few Muslims do Evolve.

Not that they have any influence to effect the masses of Muslims that are at war with each other and everyone else.

When i spoke about evolution, i meant that i looked at morality like a species. So you have two moral species

> one of them believes its correct regardless of what other people think
> the other one believes it only exists in belief

In places where there is a lot of death, the first type is bound to takeover everything.

I dunno. I guess because it's an "easy answer" to a hard problem.
"How do we resolve moral dilemmas? Everyone's right!"
@531,577 (Syntax)
I decided against a PhD but I still maintain an interest in the field. I don't think that the diversity of moral opinions is a problem. Lots of people are wrong about things all the time, and morality is no different. The fact that for example, ISIS thinks it is morally acceptable to burn someone alive and film it just means they are totally wrong about morality, in the same way that they would be totally wrong about math if they said that 5 is an even number, or that the largest possible number is 86.

There is always an easy answer to any problem, but why would people suddenly decide to make it easy? I think it is because of the growing complexity of our situation. People want to take a break, like
they always have but what suddenly enables them to do so? Its a strange strain of individualism, its individualism being imposed upon individuals.

I grew up being told Animals only kill for survival. Food chain. Animals do not kill for the thrill. Then because I spend much of my adult life in the Ocean, and see videos and talk with Scripps Ocean researchers who live here and Surf here - Killer Whales do kill for just the thrill of the hunt and there are other examples in the Animal Kingdom - Thrill killing.

Morality? We look at Psychopaths as those without Morality and expect them to behave as they do.

Before I lived and Worked with Muslims I thought it was all about one groups Morality vs the others. Then I thought it was aberrant behavior of a group that became the Tribe/Hive Philosophy.

That does fit the model of Boko Haram, Islamist perversion. It ain't Muslim, but enough people think it is and it becomes a new aberrant tribe that ends up representing the Moral center of a growing group. ISIS the same. 35,000 people drawing in others to their Moral center.

Pure Evil Morality that appeals to those in need of ...The of is wot I am not sure of OTHER Then it has appeal - A new tribe a new hive.

Yea and as you no - Most buildings built in USA do not have a 13 th floor. - Lots of Muslims who say if its not in the Koran then there is no need to no more.

Also true of serious Kosher Jews - If not in the Bible or Torah its not necessary to no - Except even they learn Math so as to earn a living
