So this is minecraft in space, but it uses an engine that wasn't fist-fucked by notch in java. i've had it since super early alpha and it's really pretty well fully featured now. It has tons of blocks, tons of crafting, and some farming mechanics as well.
mining is done either by hand drill and ores are collected by hand.
you can also build functional mining ships that can mine ores and collect them much much faster with special tool attachments and collection hoppers.
All the vehicles remain functional when moving, meaning they don't turn into "entities" or whatever and break half the shit, the ships can all be built with intricate mechanisms using conveyors and computer controlled systems blocks. you can also build star fighters with gatling guns and rocket pods and carry a machine gun while you EVA.
There is also a programmable computer block that you can write and perform programs in using a syntax similar to C
this has allowed for some really awesome player made "things" like 6 legged articulated walking robots.
so if anyone is interested in playing i think it's 20 bucks and there is multiplayer and all that
Ok
OP said > but it uses an engine that wasn't fist-fucked
If one has almost infinite time, I suggest ion thrusters for the engine.

it's better in a lot of ways, but it's not as easy to pick up. the game engine itself is way beter. but i feel you

A friend of mine gifted this to me some time ago, but at the time it seemed beta as fuck. I shall try playing it again! Any good beginner resources? Preferably not on youtube, videos sucks.

not really. there seems to be a pretty heavy focus on how all the equipment works with conveyors and shit. also the action bar is complex.
start an easy star custom map with creative mode. you'll have prebuild small repair and mining ships and large battleships and even a space station.
learn to pilot the mining ship, assign functions to the action bar and drill for ore. once you can collect ore you fly it over some hoppers and transfer the ores into refining equipment by positioning the "collector" over the hopper and purging ores. it's actually kinda fun.
then you can follow the conveyors from the refinery where processed materials are taken to a machine shop for assembly into whatever you want. so the crafting is all done by machines and a build queue.
when building ships or stations worry more about how the internal piping is laid out rather than the external shell. build out the internal pipeline for functionality (carry missiles to rocket pods, pipes carrying ore from drills to storage boxes, etc) and then worry about building armor on top of your "machinery."

ship building tips
all ships regardless of size require
a cockpit or flight seat
a reactor core
a gyroscope
thrusters placed on the front, back, top, bottom, left, and right sides.
the gyroscope controls rotation (pitch, yaw, roll) and the thrusters control translation (strafe up/down, left/right, forward/back.)
by default the ships will automatically dampen all motion to zero using thrusters. this can be toggled on and off with z. this means if you only have thusters on the back and accelerate forward the ships can't stop you unless you 180 and thrust in the opposite direction you're traveling.
not fun.
so just put thrusters on and let the ships computer stop for you. toggling inertial dampening off, however, ceases this behavior.
so that's all you need to make a flyable ship, but anything less will be hard to pilot

i remember playing this game in the past and makign an elevator

last night i played with rotors and made an engine segment of a large ship with rotateable engine nacells. so i could thrust forward and rotate the nacell to thrust backwards which was really cool.
there's also pistons which i haven't played with and a programmable computer block.
so i could totally see an elevator happening.

i have no idea what a nacell is.
All I did was like create a square pole on a big ship, build another smaller "ship" around that pole, and added up/down thrusters lol

ah, nice. you'd like rotors, you can make scissor lifts easily.
mostly though i've been making OP fighter ships with like 12 rocket launchers and fly around and obliterate NPC ships.

oh, a nacelle is a housing or tank for something on the outside of an aircraft
like the engines on the starship enterprise are separate from the ship but attached by struts.

i figured out you can totally stack a whole bunch of drills on top of each other and hook it up to a rotor on a space station platform and make a 300 yard long rotating chainsaw blade of drill bits and saw huge asteroids completely in half.
i'm about to see if i can build a rotating spaceship like the one from interstellar.
