Huge Huge difference.
Now that Facebook owns Instagram (which was and still is an Application) its perhaps is the beginning as a way for Facebook to avoid the huge traffic youtube gets for competitor Google.
Instagram only allows 15 seconds of video so it has a looong way to go and needs a massive set of server farms to handle wot YouTube handles but I think that is where Facebook is headed.
So Facebook yes is loaded with Images.
Instagram is mostly an image service. Photobucket etc are things of the past and Instagram is trying to get traffic imgur and Tumblr currently have.
Some other service will come along and Instagram will also be a thing of the past -
Oh Facebook wood look the same with or without Instagram. They bought it b4 Yahoo or Google could buy it and both were bidding on it and lost. Instagram forces lots of limits on photos so its not at all like Photobucket was/is -

I feel the same way, @OP. I never "got" social networking. I understand how it works, but I just have no idea why you'd want to do it or what makes it enjoyable.

Opposed to MySpace, you can add virtually anyone you would like. If you add too many "strangers" on Facebook, they block you from adding for a certain amount of time. I think it's so stupid. It's definitely a site to social network, however it's a lot different in comparison to MySpace. However, on Facebook, there's nothing wrong with groups with strangers. Public groups? Then why is it bad to add a "stranger"?

Personally, however, I'm in the same boat. Don't use it, have no interest in doing so. But I do find it interesting how these days, some people assume that you have it. A few times, I've had to clarify to people that I don't have a Facebook account.
