He stopped eating around December 12 (because cats are fickle) and lost 1/3 of his body weight. That heavy body fat processing turned into fatty liver disease and then to jaundice. The stress has compounded to pancreatitis.

I was force feeding him but that was too difficult for both of us so now he has a feeding tube.

@previous (netscape !fV146ZJdLc)
He is 11, which is old but not ancient.

It goes into his esophagus through the front left side of his neck and is held in place with this collar. There are some food drippings around where the tube enters the collar.

He is on pain killers, broad spectrum antibiotics, milk thistle, and ursodiol. Once a day I change the bandages under the collar, swab the incision site with a cleaner, and apply silver-based antibiotics.

He is salivating a lot, and I assume it's a response to dislodge whatever he senses in his throat. He has puked several times, but I think it's from pancreas pain. He cries when I move him, but I suspect most of that is his fear of force feeding.

Okay! I just cleaned the site and changed his bandage.

There are temporary sutures to hold the tube in place and back toward the scruff of his neck. The incision had very little yellow, unscented discharge that just appeared to be iodine stained dried ointment and maybe some skin cells. It is a light yellow and only two small cotton swabs cleaned the site.

No pus or swelling!

It was a hot summer and I’m wondering if some of his canned food spoiled. I was trying to switch him from a free feeder to scheduled feedings and during that process he stopped.

His stomach is fine but he has pancreatitis and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_hepatic_lipidosis

This is an entirely curable disease and not caused by any chronic condition. It would be more inhumane to make the cat die.

Will this condition be cured/ended? If the poor cat will have to suffer like this for years, it might indeed be best to mercifully euthanize him/her.

Anonymous E replied with this 11 years ago, 8 hours later, 18 hours after the original post[^] [v] #528,853

@previous (N)
It typically is cured within 40 days from the start of treatment and has no ongoing quality of life issues after the condition is resolved.

He is more alert, today. I think he looked horrible in the OP photo because of opioids. He gets really spaced out on those.

Today he sat in his perch and slept. He woke up a few times, excited to hear birds calling outside.

He is going to make it! I took him to the vet again and they tried the daily feeding regimen. The doc realized that food wouldn't stay down and gave him an anti-nausea drug.

He has started purring, again.

Anonymous E double-posted this 11 years ago, 14 minutes later, 5 days after the original post[^] [v] #530,041

Also! My other cat is having the exact same symptoms and her bloodwork shows the same organ stress. (Pancreatitis that leads to fatty liver)

The doctors strongly suspect the cats ingested something toxic back in November. They might have had spoiled food or ate some of a houseplant.
