I have had a run-in with a Ricoh before.
I went over to collect a printout and was greeted with a simple instruction to check the paper tray for a jam. There was a labelled diagram on the LCD screen telling me to open what was being named flap C which halfway down at about knee-height. Easy enough. Now that was open, I was onto step 2, which was challenging me to rotate the paper feeder located behind levers J and K.
Half an hour later, the office is nearly empty and it is getting dark outside when a voice startles me. It is the cleaner wondering what I am up to.
"What's that?" he asked, noticing how covered in sweat and machine oil. I look to my left hand in which I am holding cog H that I had patiently removed during steps 11 & 13.
"I don't know.", I replied. He shoots me a look. He knew I had blagged my way underqualified into this job, when I had to explain that I didn't know how he could connect his phone to the office wifi.
"Is it out of paper?"
"Um....." I was panicking now. "I can't... remember." What the hell was I doing here? Did I need to print something? I must do, as I was at the printer and had been for the last 2 hours -- blindly following instructions and matching up labelled diagrams from the LCD display while this damned device enslaved me as its personal healthcare engineer.
"If it's out of paper, you just need to put some more in the bottom tray, there's some in the cupboard.". I knew he was right, but I was only following the instructions.
I never used the printer again.
