Topic: I ate instant potatoes today

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #39,645

That I mixed with boiling water at home. I'm pretty sure KFC potato and gravy is instant potato so it's not like it's actually my first time. It was grate

I'll do it again too. Instant potato is to potatoes, what instant noodles are to noodles.

It's actually not bad at all with just water. It is noticeably better if you add milk and/or butter, though.

Recently Discovered there are HUGE DIFFERENCES With various brands of Dried skim milk - Do not have a clue wot brand I am now using that ROCKS Totally - cause I buy it from a bin (bulk) and need to ask if they will tell me the brand just in case that market goes belly up

Got me to look up nutritional value of Fresh vs Dried. The industrial process to make instant potatoes, takes a lot of nutrition out of the potato yet ends up with the same calories. References say the instant is loaded with sodium - And of course references to loss of flavor in the industrial process.

4 mins to microwave a potato and yes the hand mashing takes a few minutes. I have tried doing it quick with a blender but that yields a texture that is not my fav and the time to clean up the blender - doubt any real time is saved. Mashing also expends calories vs pouring stuff out of a box and adding milk or water.

Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 6 minutes later, 19 hours after the original post[^] [v] #527,836

Microwaving dries it and takes out flavor as well. You people need to just fucking buy whole food and cook whole food.

Syntax replied with this 11 years ago, 17 minutes later, 19 hours after the original post[^] [v] #527,841

@previous (B)
Then you are using the microwave WRONG

Now I mostly grill food cause where I live it is the preferred method so a Whole potato on the grill is rather quick - 20 mins vs the 4 of a Microwave and yes the texture is more better then Microwave.
And if I am doing a Roast in the oven then of course I put in potatoes to bake

And when I am in a rush its Microwave - Now this will shock you so you must do your own research with #2 because lots of positive science as well as tasting panels with results

1:Hit the web yourself with search term compare microwave cooking vs kitchen range cooking or

2:Does microwaving food remove its nutritional value?

For instance
If you're concerned about getting the most nutrition out of your eats, microwaving is a safe bet. In fact, it's near the top of the list for nutritionally sound food-preparation methods. If you use your microwave with a small amount of water to essentially steam food from the inside, you'll retain more vitamins and minerals than with almost any other cooking method.

"Whenever you cook food, you'll have some loss of nutrients," says registered dietician and certified food scientist Catherine Adams Hutt. "The best cooking method for retaining nutrients is one that cooks quickly, exposes food to heat for the smallest amount of time and uses only a minimal amount of liquid."

Microwave cooking does that.

Consider spinach. Boil it on the stove, and it can lose up to 70% of its folic acid. Microwave it with just a little water, and you'll retain nearly all its folic acid.

I happen to have a degree in the Culinary Arts, and I can assure you that the microwave changes the structure of food, dries it out, and takes away flavor.

If anything, I probably over salt. I boil potatoes in salted water, and add salt when I mash. Then I sprinkle salt over everything my plate before I even taste it!

@527,842 (B)
> I happen to have a degree in the Culinary Arts
Years ago b4 the research that verifies nutrition of many veggies is more better when Microwaved. Face a few facts - Until recently in Cajun Country Fish was wayyyyyy overcooked and to often fried

Weird how the French who used Roux as the last step in cooking - Migrate to Cajun country and Roux is the First ingredient made and one starts with Roux rather then ends with Roux

Now the Cajuns have learned to make a stock by boiling down some shell fish but the GREAT Shell Fish is saved for a few minutes of cooking at the very end - People can and do learn more better ways and it turns out the Micorwave as studied has Virtues not found otherwise - Yet I have NEVER cooked Fresh Spinach in a Microwave

@527,845 (A)
Only about 30% of the population is sensitive to Salt - B sure you are NOT one of them. I am not yet I found lower salt gave me more in flavors instead of masking them. That is IF the ingredients are loaded with flavor. Around here Fresh is found around almost every town with farmers markets and several markets not far from me do Field to store with no middle operation - I can see the trucks offloading directly from Field to store - The major chains have distribution centers so Veggies Fruits are never all that fresh

I love Pepper in all its forms but just cause someone does not like it does NOT make it wrong - Taste is a personal thing - Someone on MC enjoys such that can be found in bathroom - So when that person is making suggestions re food one must not pay to much attention

@previous (A)
Opposite for me re Mushrooms but I do have friends who feel like you - Fungus among us but not among you - You wood probably hate much in Chinese real cooking or Italian where dried mushrooms are popular and dry is on purpose to concentrate the flavors which wood make you even more unhappy

Ok here is an idea. With the Tesco™ Value™ Kettle™ unplugged, cut a larger hole in the top. Buy some Tesco™ Value™ Broccoli™, Tesco™ Value™ Salt™, and Tesco™ Value™ Pepper™. Boil the broccoli a little in the Tesco™ Value™ Kettle™, then sprinkle a little salt and pepper on it, and let us know how it tastes!

It's strange you can't open a kettle to clean out the calcium or silica buildup from boiling water.

Someone told me about wrapping a fillet of fish in tinfoil, placing it in a dishwasher for a wash cycle and you get perfectly steamed fish. I thought of this thread...
