Topic: What is your opinion on the vaccination debate?

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #39,613

I, for one, side with hard science and I think vaccines are 100% preferable to any possible side effects, and the risk of contracting deadly childhood diseases for those who are not vaccinated. What do you think?

Here is an interesting article: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/20/378630798/parents-who-shun-vaccines-tend-to-cluster-boosting-childrens-risk?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20150120

Doctors and hospitals need patients. Population is out of control.
Vaccines can be counter productive.

Vaccines ought to be 100% compulsory.

This. It's just a lot of dumb and/or misinformed people. And they only do harm with their protests.

Ineffective. Children with no choice in the matter will just be homeschooled instead. It won't do shit about the parents.

In the ancient world, many agricultural communities sacrificed young children to ensure a fruitful harvest. From their perspective, it was not only acceptable, it was necessary. The gods could be utterly ruthless when denied their blood: better one child die than entire families starve in a famine.

We apply the same principle to vaccination: we know that a small percentage of children will suffer crippling side effects such as brain damage, bleeding disorders or seizures. Some will even die, but nobody cares about that, because the general community is safe. Viral infections are far more dangerous than than the ancient gods: better one insignificant child die than millions get infected...right?

1. Make all vaccinations free for everyone.
2. Make vaccinations for common diseases and ones which have a high risk of becoming endemic in the absence of herd immunity mandatory for anyone who is not allergic to them.

I don't get flu vaccines, because the one time I got one I was sick all winter, and also because I've gotten flu only twice in my life. That being said, vaccines for serious things like smallpox, polio, and rabies are definitely a good thing and, imo, outweigh the risks a thousandfold.

Not vaccinating is as stupid as circumcision. Risking your childs life for something so stupid.

A tradition I would like to see go the way of succumbing to polio.
