When television first appeared, some people thought it would kill the radio. Decades later and it's still going, but in this modern age there is a plethora of other entertainment options; vidya, podcasts etc. It's only use is in cars. Still, I find it pleasant to have on in the background. I'd rather listen to radio than watch tv and there is no radio licence like there is for the tv. I'd say radio has at least several decades before it's too outdated.

Nah, not until something similar replaces it. A low-cost easy access broadcast frequency is very useful. Internet does not nearly have the same accessibility since it does not support passive listeners.

If I didn't have radio I'd never hear any new music.
Also I use the radio when I shower too. Except someone set up a stupid sports talk station on FM broadcasting at a frequency really close to my favorite stations' so now I can't get the radio tuned properly. Fuck sports.

no, it will never die. it's part of the EM spectrum, so it's actually something that is inherent to the universe and that aspect of "radio" will never "die." And it will probably never fall out of use, either, because the invisible transmission of information (re: media) across the EM spectrum is too useful. to everybody. and it's cheap... and it's freely accessible meaning you don't need an intermediary to transmit the signal, you can be content producer AND content provider at the same time without needing an entire infrastructure in place to carry the signal to the consumer. There of course will always be hobbyists as well who will keep it alive. HAM radio is a good example, there is very little day-to-day use for the wavelengths that HAM operates on, but there are still people that make use of those bands everyday. It's a hobby, but it's keeping that portion of the spectrum alive. If you were to suddenly replace all "radio stations" with "internet radio stations" and deliver the content via futuristic 7G or whatever then you'd see a lot of hobbyist and pirate radio stations popping up all over the old radio wavelengths. from what i understand it's actually not all that hard to broadcast on those frequencies, it's just hard to transmit for the vast distances modern radio stations can broadcast without millions of dollars of equipment.

ive thought about it, it seems like a cool idea
but antennae are so expensive!!!
you can do it with one of those mp3
things that broadcast on car
radios but you have to
modify it a tiny bit
internally
you can boost signal from 45 feet
to around 100 or so IIRC
but ive never done it

yeah, i've heard that some of the old "bag phones" that were corded to a transmitter had a 5 watt transmitter and that you can use them to broadcast on radio wavelengths or something like that. i don't really know, but i bet if you weren't drowned out by big broadcasting a person could have a nice little very local pirate radio station. maybe a few miles anyway

thats the reason why its so difficult to do
difficult and expensive anyways-
basically it boils down to this:
none of us are rich enough to afford
FCC grade broadcasting antennae
so now most people just start
broadcasts via internet
there are other ways you could do it
(CB etc) but even then its still
reaaaally fuckin expensive
