Possibly

That is a bit different from regular tor usage, and a VPN would not come into play for that. If you want any tips or help a bit more information is required. Maybe you should read/gloss over https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en first

Whats the point of a vpn?

Shifty in what way?

r04r replied with this 11 years ago, 5 minutes later, 35 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #526,183

@526,180 (swamplights !!0lQNsDoq/)
Two things primarily. First to cloak your traffic from your ISP, they will not be able to see what you are doing while the VPN is active, all they see is the encrypted traffic towards the VPN provider. The VPN provider (and their ISP) will be able to see this traffic coming from the VPN provider, and may subpoena the VPN provider for your details. Most VPN providers claim they don't record that kind of info, but then you're trusting them.

The second use is to cloak your own external IP address ( http://www.whatismyip.com/ ) from the destination that you visit, say a website. This website will then see one of the IP addresses of the VPN provider instead of your own. The VPN provider will likely have many addresses at their disposal, probably spread all over the globe. However the same applies as in the previous paragraph, the VPN provider is able to keep track of you still. If they actually do this or not cannot be proven.

They generally do not allow you to host content and make it accessible for other people. Some VPN providers do allow you to open incoming ports, but this does not work well as your external IP address changes constantly and, again, the VPN provider can track you still.

A VPN is not really useful if you are considering hosting a tor hidden service. If you are using tor to browse hidden services or the internet it is also not useful, except to replace the fact, as far as your ISP can see, that you use tor with you using a VPN.

All this said, considering you do not (yet) fully know what all this means I am not sure it is wise to host any content for which you would consider tor. In general it may not be wise, either.

Unless you intent to visit some kind of website/hidden service that will host the content for you (for free, because paying for things will lead back to you obviously unless bitcoin and blablabla). Then you offload a lot of the risk to them, and you just need to make sure that your connection to their server cannot be linked to you.

@OP

Be prepared for a lot of websites to block you for no reason.
Be prepared for half the websites to make you enter a CAPTCHA every 2 pages you browse because they have their Cloudflare settings set to do that.

@526,183 (r04r)
> The second use is to cloak your own external IP address ( http://www.whatismyip.com/ ) from the destination that you visit, say a website. This website will then see one of the IP addresses of the VPN provider instead of your own.

If OP uses Tor, they will first have to spent 5 minutes getting past the Cloudflare CAPTCHA to see their IP on that site.

I've used Advtor in the past to use tor as a proxy. It's not secure this way, but you can choose 2 hops and the exit node.

Are you retarded or something? It should take you a few seconds to solve a captcha.

@526,220 (buspuppie !!oamdRB3zv)
Visit the website. Tails is a special operating system that is booted instead of your regular operating system which makes sure you don't accidently your tor usage. Basically forces everything you do through tor.

It's a boot disc that doesn't leave a trace on the computer you boot it from and is set up to use tor. If you use a USB you can save files encrypted files on it, even though that goes against what it is trying to achieve.

There is no evidence that they did. There are theoretical attacks, but none that have been successfully carried out as far as anyone knows. The same, or similar, theoretical attacks also exist for I2P. If I am mistaken and you have any articles with reputable sources claiming otherwise I would love it if you were to link them.

If you are referring to the darknet market busts, those were most certainly just old fashioned police work.

I read an article on it, arstechnica I think

Yeah, that was exactly it. Good article on how he was tracked down here: http://www.dailydot.com/crime/fbi-investigation-dread-pirate-roberts-silk-road/

Best bit:
On Jan. 27, 2011, a user named Altoid made a post on The Shroomery, a website devoted to illegal mushrooms, about advertising Silk Road. Altoid never made any other posts on Shroomery, leading FBI investigators to believe he’d registered only to advertise his newly launched drug marketplace.

“I came across this website called Silk Road,” Altoid wrote. “It's a Tor hidden service that claims to allow you to buy and sell anything online anonymously. I'm thinking of buying off it, but wanted to see if anyone here had heard of it and could recommend it. I found it through silkroad420.wordpress.com, which, if you have a tor browser, directs you to the real site at http://tydgccykixpbu6uz.onion. Let me know what you think…”

Altoid used Tor to make the post, rendering it relatively untraceable by the FBI.

Two days later, on Jan. 29, 2011, another user named Altoid made a similar post on BitcoinTalk.org. “Altoid” was on a campaign to generate interest in the site. He ended both messages with “Let me know what you think.” The repetition tipped investigators off.

On Oct. 11, 2011, Altoid posted a wanted ad on BitcoinTalk looking for “an IT pro in the Bitcoin community.” He asked interested parties to email “rossulbricht at gmail dot com”, forever linking Ulbricht’s name with Silk Road in the eyes of the FBI.
He also used a StackOverflow account that he'd initially signed up for using his real email address and name, which he later changed. Here is the question he asked: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15445285/how-can-i-connect-to-a-tor-hidden-service-using-curl-in-php

In the first few days after he was busted, before they'd released any info, I was really expecting some next-level policing, maybe something was backdoored or hacked into or whatever. Turns out they just used Google. Was disappoint.
