The thing that happened to the nazi germans, its nothing short of madness. Of course we all like to think we would have never done such things, but think about it, you are sane and you only know the sane part of yourself. It depends largely on what you mean by "would never have done such things". Only a relatively small amount of Nazis were responsible for the whole Final Solution thing. Indeed, it was kept so tightly under wraps it was largely unknown about until after the war, on both the Axis and Allied sides.
I don't think what happened to the vast majority of Germans is any different than what happened to the British or Americans of the time: many joined up, willing to die for their country, and many were conscripted. In fact, America interned its Japanese American population in concentration camps and deprived them of their civil rights for the duration of the war (as did Canada). Really, the Axis and Allies differed by degree only, as far as morality is concerned. I guess the great irony is that the European part of WWII was fought over Poland, which afterwards was handed over from the Nazis to that nice liberal democrat Joe Stalin.

yeah but even then, some of the nazi soldiers did what they did. Its easy to see it all as just another tragedy of war, but its not, its something new, something special. Its a society that did not just kill to stay alive, but killed to achieve racial purity. Of all things, they killed those Jews for racial purity. What does racial purity even mean? Taken to its logical dead-end, it simply means a world where only one race exists.

Pretty much any authoritarian government has done lots of mass murder. All the Communist governments have gone on the same mass murdering spree as the Germans and they did about 20x as much because they went on much longer and in a much wider territory.
Most Western governments are growing more and more authoritarian, too. It's some sort of chimp-like mentality you can see in children. Those who think for themselves get punished. All authoritarian goverments go around purging anyone who dares to think differently than them. Even the nazis who pretended to care about the Germans, threw any German who didn't agree with them in concentration camps too, after of course purging the government of people who didn't think exactly like Hitler. I remember once seeing a video of all these Catholic nuns entering concentration camps. Communism did a lot of religious purging too.

I don't know how they were able to tell Japanese apart from other East Asian ethnicities though. Aside from the last names, it's hard to tell.

All communism post Lenin has just been awful... and even being sympathetic to Leninism it would be an outright lie to say he didn't use genocide and terror.
Both Eastern and Western governments have done their fair share of atrocities. It's not just a growing issue in the West despite what personal biases or blindspots we may have.
