This is what I'm reding currently. Wasn't even looking to buy a book on history, just saw it in a bookstore and liked the look of it, since I've always had a fascination with the Romans. Very glad I picked it up.It's a pretty great read, it strikes the right balance of informative and entertaining. It's pretty fun to read about all of the cunning political and military manoeuvring that the greats of Roman history went through in order to achieve their ends.
It also includes smaller, sometimes amusing details of the times, like how some Roman slingers carved crude insults about their enemies into their slings ("Hey Octavian, you suck cock!" was a particularly witty one, I think).

It seems to go chronologically. Currently, I'm at the early years of the Empire. Mark Antony and his main squeeze Cleopatra just died, and Octavian is looking at where he'll go next. I'm interested to see how things pan out from here, but, of course, I'm aware it'll all come crashing down, at some point.
I have to say, one person I liked was Cleopatra. She was charismatic enough to manipulate Roman Emperors, and became quite feared by the Roman public.

Watching Augustus scramble to groom an heir while all the Julio-Claudian males keep dying off is entertaining, and then there's Julia running around boinking everyone while Augustus is trying to legislate family values. There's a lot of crazy to read about before you move on from Octavian.

I am currently reading "The Chamber" by John Grisham, it's not bad enough to give up on, but it's not great either. I'll be glad when it's over and I move on to something else. I take a long time reading books because I don't really sit down with a book and read it in big chunks, I just read a bit every few days consistently. I've been reading "The Chamber" since at least September, maybe longer. In fact I don't know why I keep reading Grisham, I think I've only enjoyed one of his books.

There is so much interesting Roman history you could spend a lifetime learning it all. Dan Carlin covered some of the highlights in his podcast "Hardcore History", he has a great way of telling stories even if you know them already, check it out if you can stomach podcasts at all.

I sorta know what you mean about not often reading books. Usually, when I'm at home, I'm occupied with some video game, so I don't often get around to reading. Luckily, my frequent train rides give me ample opportunity to read, so I do it then.

Just read his Wikipedia intro. Damn, he was a nasty one. But three books? Are they different authors, or do they all follow on? If it's the former, wouldn't it get a bit samey?
I sometimes like reading about serial killers, and morbid shit like that. Read a book about spree killers, once. And am currently reading one about Cornish murders. I would like to look for more true crime books, but Waterstones have mysteriously removed their true crime shelf.

It always sucks when close friends move away... but I think... I think it's possible you could hang out with someone else IRL again.
Being a misanthropic autistic introvert can make meeting new people seem more difficult than it really is... I might be projecting there. Anyway it's not going to be exactly the same but you could look for others with the same interests or try to meet people through tinder/grindr... which is not nearly as ridiculous as it sounds.

It's not that he's moving away, it's that he's staying away. I made it through the last 6 years on the hope that he'd be able to move closer once his re-enlistment came up. He's going to settle down now, and probably start a life. And I've still done nothing with mine.

There's no reason you can't do something with your life or start one for that matter, bud. I don't know what your relationship with that person was and this advice comes a little late but you can't hinge everything on one person... or put off your life until someone else gets theirs sorted.
