it's called fear of people different than you and it has been around as long as human civilization. it's probably a hold over from our days as hunter gatherers and a healthy dose of distrust was an advantage.

I disagree. I think that with the rise of technology stuff embodied societies with confidence in themselves and for the individuals in them.

I hardly think societies and individuals are that much more confident in themselves nowadays. Maybe their egos are more bloated, but people are as confused as they've ever been, if not more. And I'm sure the romans, or the ottomans, etc thought of themselves as the greatest shit ever right until the dawn of the day when decadence knocked too loudly on their doors.

But that's just sort of a confidence that is all in your head but not in your actions. Like squeegee told us, this mindset is ancient and if you compare the severity of it in ancient times and today's times, then its a lot better. Of course things occasionally get worse in the world, but i don't think it will ever take as much time as it did the first time to reach the same height of glory.
