Well, since I cannot pay rent, and I had already told them that at the apartments, I basically emptied and cleaned my apartment. They are not in the office today, sop I am leaving a letter and my keys in the drop box. The letter says that I cannot pay rent, but that the unit is empty and clean, and I gave them my new address. I said I id not have money, but I hoped we cold work out something where I could pay over time. I emphasized that I am not just walking away, but that I will pay them if they can have some mercy and let me pay in installments. Do you think I handled this situation the right way

It's cheaper/easier for them to accept payment installments if you really can do that, vs. suing you. Can't hurt to have a proposed schedule of payments worked out in case they do call you.

I feel like you made a mistake on leaving in such a hasty manner, you should have notified the lessor that you were having money troubles at-least 2 months before you walked out.
