It's all pseudo-happiness, yeah they may enjoy themselves at the time, but alone, they're secretly crying.
I know someone just like this, and I pity him. I had the choice to go down that road, and retrospectively, not doing so is best decision I have ever made, when comparing myself to him.

I never looked at you in admiration because even while mentally crippled by hedonism you still have the capacity to memorize bullshit, solve math problems and go make lots of money for famiry. Even five foot gooks at my school can do that.
You exuded a sense of complete purity of both character and heart. You were my little dove. You loved what was good and fair in life and hated everything that was stupid, cruel or senseless. You had great insight, but that was only a vehicle - that optimism and creativity, that playfulness and love of life, that something you had that can't be fully expressed in words, that was your substance.
Preserve your GPA and intellectual prowess all you'd like. You're more than capable. You're a goddess among insects, why shouldn't you be able to achieve more than they do? The question, instead, is why you still need to wake up in the morning. Not why you want to, or why you have to as dictated by some obligation, but why you need to keep on surviving; what it is you need to accomplish in this shitty, disgusting nightmare full of misery and failure we call mortal existence before you leave it forever as we all do when our time comes.
