Since you go buy cider or beer at the same place daily, how do you avoid the embarrassment of the staff seeing you every day, knowing that you are a raging alcoholic? Serious question: I want to buy more wine today, but that would mean like four days in a row at the same place, and I can just feel their judgment. What do I do?

I feel the same way about buying snacks... so the shame must be unbearable for an alco.

LOL Real alcoholics don't give a shit, and shopkeepers generally welcome regular customers. When I was seriously on the booze, I've had shopkeepers actually re-open their store to sell me an $80 bottle of absinthe after they were, by chance, behind me in line at a different store when I was buying gin and telling the cashier that I was too late to get the absinthe that I really wanted. (I still bought the gin, obviously.) The clerk at a local Tesco might look at you sideways, but local retailers love a functional alcoholic.

Actually, I had the same experience as @519,843 (D) at a major chain store. I was with a friend of a friend (who had just turned drinking age and we had dragged her home after too much drinking... Seriously, puking in our tub and calls to poison control.) who was trying to purchase alcohol. It was the --morning-- afternoon after her big party, and we went out in search of food and drinks. She had just turned 21 and was purchasing some wine. I was buying gin and sake and some food to prepare. When the cashier didn't card her she asked why she wasn't being carded. (because looking too old to be carded is a bit of an insult when you just turned 21...) The cashier, in his defense, points at me and says, "This guy is an alcoholic and would have just bought it for you anyway!" (He saw us all being chummy in line, and yeah, that probably would have happened.) So LOL.

So yeah, we just don't give a fuck.

I only use self-checkout. I don't like speaking to people.
