it's a long download, like 20 gigs, and can be fairly slow. took 4 hours for me last night. some people took longer. patch days are slow as fuck.

i think you'll particularly enjoy the character creator. also the apparel. it's kind of a big deal actually. that'll come with the social module in a few months.
and you'll like that player death is persistent. once you die, you're dead. for good. but you bequeath your belongings and wealth to an alt you make that is related in some way. so everyone will get to make lots of characters and build family lineages and reputations. it's going to be a first person sim kinda game in a lot of ways.

in game insurance for hull replacements in the event of being destroyed.

you might have a fleet of ships and millions in wealth in the bank to bequeath.

also FPS isn't a requirement. you could also be an engineer or gunner on board a cap ship. there's other seat actions too. Marine or other FPS type class is only going to be a few of the roles available.
but yeah, someone like a Trader or Merchant might get boarded if they are caught in a low security zone. You can distress call and maybe the Advocacy will come rescue you, but you might have to dogfight, take a lot of damage as you flee, drop your insured/uninsured cargo, or even die. You'll have escape pods and ship self destruct sequences and all that, but at some point FPS might happen even if you're playing the economy careers.

I kinda like this. Something always bugged me about getting shot to death and then popping right back to life at a respawn point. I wonder if they've ever made a game where after you die, you either go to heaven and the game is won, or you go to some kind of hell and have to try to fight it out there, based on your behavior in the earthly life.

for CIG this concept is called "death of a spaceman" and is one of the unique aspects of Star Citizen most backers are looking forward too. The way that it works is that your body is very much designed like one of the ships with destructible states. If you're shot in the arm then that arm loses ability to function going from good 2 bad 2 very bad with the last state being "nonfunctional." so if you're arm is less functional it would affect aiming. if a leg is crippled you're going to hobble badly or crawl. you can be dragged to safety, and a team medic can heal you up to a point. Once your shot you begin to bleed, and if the bleeding doesn't stop you lose effectiveness up to the point of death. Once bleeding is stopped you can be healed to an extent. A medic cannot heal you fully, but if your wound is not "mortal" than you can get back in the fight because your nano spacesuits make you better than average i guess. so head shots matter. to become fully healed, or have a mortal wound fixed you must be stabilized by a medic and transported to either a hospital or a Frigate outfitted as a mobile hospital.
So if you're a marine you'll have military support (like during the single player mode) and after a mortal injury you'll wake up revived in a hospital, but maybe with a robotic heart and new arms and a bionic eye. If you're in the PU and you're attacked you send a distress call and hopefully the Advocacy reaches you in time to intervene and rescue you with Search and Rescue ships. Traveling deep into low security or lawless regions can be very lethal. Also players can play as medics and be responders to your emergencies in some instances.
Eventually though carelessness will catch up with you. you can only be repaired from mortal wounds so many times before you do finally expire and your wealth and reputation falls on your heir.

you won't lose much, it's just a penalty. So like in WoW when you die you have to run 1/2 way across huge maps as a ghost to respawn at your body. This is a time penalty and also very annoying. death in wow sucks because you do lose a little something when you die, even if it's just a minor inconvenience. In COD you just pop back and so everyone is super careless and rambo till they die.
in star citizen you'll keep all your ships, all your loots, your hangars and everything, but, you'll have to rename and reskin a character in the character creator to give all of that swag too. So instead of ALWAYS just waking up in a med ship with a new insurance replaced ship, every so often you'll have to spend a few minutes making a new dude to play with. But death won't cost you more than that character's life. in fact you'll inherit their NPC faction reputations, like, "I knew your pop, he was a great smuggler, sure i'll give you work. but don't disappoint me."
so it's just a different kind of incentive to not play super carelessly. there are other ways they are going to discourage even more reckless play than just carelessness, it's going to be dangerous to be purposefully destructive or disruptive

indeed it will be
it's a sandbox MMO with a single player campaign
will feature an interactive and dynamic economy in a persistent FPS universe
that includes single seat and multiple seat ships some with up to 100+ action stations for massive crews
of players and NPCs to operate themselves.
there'll also be pets
and it'll include some sim (as in the sims) kind of game mechanics as well. but discussion on that is in it's infancy. In fact the recently coined phrase "First Person Universe" to describe the game as not just your average FPS but as a much more deep kind of immersive experience. think FPS the Sims in spaceships with dozens of jobs with all kinds of roles to fill and all kinds of downtime activities beyond just shooting and flying around.

depending where you are there will be safe zones. Planets are going to have cities with security and weapons will be nonfunctional in some areas. there will be PvP areas, but that's more like a lawless world of backwater mining colonies or pirate hubs. There will also be secure shipping lanes so most business can be conducted using them but they won't be the most profitable areas generally because everyone will be playing it safe.
To make more money faster you could take jobs in low-sec or no-sec areas or do more dangerous work, like smuggling or slave trading or mercenary or bounty hunting work. you could also be one of those pirates out there fucking people over. seriously, even if you don't want to fly maybe you'd like to be Command and Control and coordinate the battle zone while your squad of pirate raiders try to board and capture a luxury yacht full of rich politicians to ransom.

meh, there's a PvP slider and instancing so you can set PvP to zero and all you'll find are NPCs everywhere and have little to zero chance of playing against another player. or you can set it to high and be placed into instances with other players and few NPCs. So if you're worried about being PvP'd to death just set the slider to zero and go about playing solo with NPCs. but less risk, less reward.
hangars and homes and all will be private instances too
even WoW has a PvP toggle

i dunno, the economy will be based on an NPC to player ratio that is supposed to mitigate against the ability for any one individual or even large groups of people from affecting the economy too much. i think it's like trying to dilute the problem to the point of irrelevance. but i don't know too much about this, we'll know more the closer it gets to beta and they start plugging everything into the persistent economic universe thing they are building in austin.
we'll see.

Didn't that happen with the other giant spaceship game? I can't remember what its called, there was a massive banking scam and it fucked the game.

so i think it's like whatever job a player can do in the PU, an NPC can do as well, and they do! They take jobs, they do all the trading stuff and mercenary work and all that. You're just one character among them. And something like every 10th character you see is statistically a human player. The PvP slider effects this ratio. The economy is based on needs, so like a new settlement will need supplies, so you can haul stuff to them, and other players can pirate (or NPCs can) but if they try to GOONSQUAD a shipping lane then the settlement declines and the UEE generates missions for players and NPCs to go and kill the pirates fucking shit up. Also as the economy dynamically changes cities can grow and their needs can change, so if you visit a planet and come back you might see a new city or a city turned to ruins.
they want players to be able to have an effect on this, but they also want to be able to control it themselves to prevent as much griefing type stuff as possible. Also, like how forums have mods and how judges sentence criminals, there will be the in-game Advocacy General which will consist of NPC police, and CIG employee/in game player criminal judges and prosecutors. If a player is scamming insurance or otherwise being a cheating dick, instead of banning him and all that normal crap, these basically glorified game mods are going to be arbiters and distributors of justice in the verse.
there will be some kind of jail scenerio (think skyrim jail or something along those lines) and possibly even more severe punishments for screwing around too much. but i'm guessing too too too much just gets you banned like normal.
anyway
@previous (E)
haven't heard about that. but yeah, i have no idea how all this is going to fully work out, but with all the devs working on it an 500000 people just like you asking these exact same questions every day i know that this issues are being considered. so it'll be interesting to see their solutions.
