Topic: just announced, the $20 Star Citizen package is going on sale again tonight.

Lonestar the Kilrathi started this discussion 11 years ago #38,834

Invalid formatter!

30 EST at the earliest. $20, full game, aurora starter ship, beta access, and alpha access. plus you'll get all early back rewards going forward.

i'll try and post before they go up for sell, i'm also going to try and pick up one or two for friends but i can't guarantee i'll get them and be able to hold them. so try and get one yourself if you want one.

Squeegee, your persistence in advertising this game on here despite nobody ever expressing any interest in it is admirable. You are a good man.

@previous (B)
interest will grow as the games becomes more feature complete and ignoring it is no longer an option. it's going to be a mega hit and hit player numbers similar to EvE or maybe even WoW.

the stuff they are doing is truly "next generation" becuase they aren't being stiffled by developing for consoles, and the thing is already ground breaking and going to put other AAA titles to shame when it releases.

i'm just waiting patienty for FPS, character generation, and multicrew ships, and then the exodus from other games will really begin. there's not enough right now to truly interest non-pilot average gamers, but within 6 months more content will be aimed at "everyone" and not just content for wannabe pilots.

everyone will play star citizen. and people that don't will want to. it's also going to eclipse LoL and the other top twitch channels. just wait. this game is so far ahead of it's time it's not clicking with people how novel and unique an experience they are crafting.

best damn first person universe ever,
best damn space sim ever,
most crowdfunded project in history,
most open development of any product in history.

the devs have completely bucked the standard game development process and are delivering the highest fidelity game ever made and it will be the benchmark people use to compare hardware (like crisis back in the day).

so don't worry, i'm not even enthusiastic about it yet.

This is the game packages page. they list a $20 auroa package which is either going to go from "out of stock" to in stock
or there will be a new pledge page for this package. I'm f5ing everything looking for an exact time.

but as of this second it's labeled "out of stock", so they are i guess preparing to open it back up.
i'll do my best to give y'all heads up, but, be aware that the last batch of 5k ships sold out in a matter of mere minutes. so we won't have long to jump on them.

and a quick FYI, this game is highly taxing on GPUs, i played it just fine with a 570gtx
but it's not fully optimized. The full beta is a year away at least, so there's plenty of time to upgrade between now and the full release
and it's worth it to get it early just for the backer rewards.

Just release a new game trailer, everything rendered live and in engine.

some shots are taken from the development branch and not the public release branch so not everything you see you can do in the public alpha. yet... ;)

sweet, i'm excited to share this with all of you.

things you'll need to do:
1. you need to populate your hangar before you load the game to play. you do this from the website by clicking the My RSI link at the top of the page, logging in, and select the option My Hangar. You'll see a button marked Configuration. click it and it'll take you to a page where you have a list of your pledge ships and your hangar bays on the right. Drag your ship into any open bay and you are ready to load the game and hop into your ship.
2. Add contacts - Click the My RSI link at the top of the page. along the left of the dialog box you'll see contacts. select it and click the link that says Add Citizen to Your List. in the box that reads Search Citizen type in Lonestar_theKilrathi and it should autocomplete to my account. Click the + sign to follow contact. Do this for anyone you want on your friend list. oh yeah, copy pasting names is borked i think.
3. While you wait for the download (it's huge) read the pilot's manual (PDF) and familiarize yourself with the ship systems.
4. when you first load the game you'll be dropped into your Hangar, none of the exit doors work (the upcoming planetside module opens up the world outside your Hangar) but you can interact with your ship. You can load into the Arena Commander in-game game-simulator (in fiction the Arena Commander game modes are holographic pilot training simulators) by either sitting in your pilots seat, or by hitting escape and selecting the Arena Commander tab which will open up the game lobby. I'd recommend playing Free Flight or Solo Vanduul Swarm first, play with the controls and get a feel for the layout. there are several flight modes and various safety systems in place so you'll want to mess with those and familiarize yourself with flying "safeties off" and with "COMSTAB" off. You'll also have 2 methods of flying with mouse and keyboard, and 3 ways to fly with joystick or gamepad. relative mode (which is virtual joystick mode with fixed weapons) and non relative mode (chase the mouse cursor mode with gimballed weapons) are your m&k options, and joystick has mouse aim on/off mode (shift key), fixed gun mode, and Ctrl-C mode which is joystick-chase-the-mouse mode with gimballed guns. So there is a huge variety of play styles and preferences to experiment with. also you can move shields around, power systems up and down, and change weapons groups all from the cockpit and on the fly.
5. Join TEST Squadron. click the My RSI link at the top of the page, select Account. Find the Organization Tab and open it. I don't know what it'll look like on y'all end anymore, but find the Organization hub or whatever, just search for TEST squadron. or just go to this link https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/TEST i guess would be easiest. Apply and tell them "Lonestar the Kilrathi sent you." We have mumble, a website, forums, a reddit sub, the most popular streamers, tons of activities and a massive fleet of Org ships including a few of the absolute largest. Best org to be a part of, seriously, we are very much the most active and prolific. in fact, Montoya, the original founder of TEST Squadron got a personalized 'thank you' from the developers during their last live stream for the excellent work he's doing promoting Star Citizen and growing TEST into the most active Org in the community. here's a video from Dear Leader.
6. Have fucking fun, and know that what you experience right now is only the Unit Tester for the overall game, the actual game will be all of this plus 1000x more. And the best part is the very next module is going to be the FPS part of the game and it should drop by march at the latest.
7. If you find the game to be completely unplayable on your system, or if you really don't like it, or if you decide that it wasn't money well spent then let me know and i'll be glad to trade you $20 in steam credits or whatever in exchange for your starter package.

see you in the verse! And if y'all have any questions let me know, i, uh... kinda know a lot about this game and can answer probably much of what you'll want to know.

a quick word on joysticks

you might like to look at picking up a joystick or a HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) setup. It's quite immersive and really adds depth to the experience. gamepads are also pretty nice, but joysticks feel very right. The Thrustmaster T.16000 is a relatively inexpensive stick that has a very high quality sensor and is a great purchase for the price. I purchased 2 of these and use them in tandem for a Duel Joystick setup that is really fun to fly. I generally prefer using a left handed joystick for flight (t.16000 is ambidextrous) and using a mouse to aim my guns which is a very, very powerful combination.

Many people are loving their HOTAS setups, Thrustmaster makes the very expensive Warthog (which is flight sim enthusiast kit) HOTAS and Saitek makes the x52 which is basically a plastic Warthog clone, but is pretty nice for the money i hear. I'm going to hold off buying anything else peripheral because CIG is in talks with a joystick maker who is making a custom Star Citizen HOTAS that will be available next year. A regular HOTAS is designed for simulating atmospheric flight, not space flight, and doesn't have enough analog axis to control the extra degrees of freedom you have in space flight, so even though a HOTAS is a great setup, it's not optimal IMHO. you also need pedals with some HOTAS setups because "real" airplanes don't have twisty sticks to control rudder (yaw). So i'm going to wait for the SC HOTAS and see what it'll be like because it's highly likely they are engineering a "new type" of HOTAS that is designed specifically with space flight in mind.

that being said, if you dislike mouse and keyboard and don't want a joystick a gamepad is a perfectly acceptable alternative. many people straight up prefer it over anything else.

a quick word on Twitch Streamers

Check out BadNewsBaron, he's got a pretty cool stream. i watch him sometimes, he loves to race. He knows all the short cuts and has great times, so if you're into that his stream is a great place to go to learn the routes. He's also pretty funny and is a charming fellow, he's actually the first and only full-time Star Citizen streamer who is "working as a streamer." lots of content, fun people. He's one of the most public faces of TEST Squadron and the most popular streamer in the SC community. He has lots of contests and does a lot of giveaways of pledge packages and stand-alone ships. (some of these are supplied by the devs, actually, he's quite popular with them as well.)

Check out Captain Richard, another popular SC streamer who is ALSO in Test, he's one of the newer streamers around but has a fun stream and produces a lot of content. He does a lot of giveaways of ship packages too.

a quick word on forums

1. the reddit sub is tits. bookmark it. best info aggregates from the RSI website forums.
2. the TEST Squadron reddit sub is great. It's slower than the SC sub, but contains the same important info plus TEST specific stuff.
3. the TEST website forums are good. kinda slow, but it's how i heard about the PTU sign up and also the aurora sale today. people played that info close to the chest, but TEST has some great snoops and scoop everything it seems.
4. the actual RSI website forums are fucking terrible. there's a lot going on here for a whole bunch of reasons, so an analogy is appropriate. It's like a mountain fed lake with some toxic waste dumps around it. if you go far enough upstream the flow is nice, and clean, and refreshing. but the further down you do the more toxic and acidic and acerbic a insufferable the flow becomes. Some of the toxic waste dumps were placed there to purposefully poison the flow in an attempt to make the water undrinkable. there is at least one "supertroll" who everyone suspects is an autistic manchild who feels slighted in some way because he manufactures fake content and spreads it around the community in an attempt to defame a specific female employee of the company and harm the overall image of the company itself. the others are suspected of being industry trolls who are being paid to try and disrupt the meteoric rise of this crowdfunded project. if crowdfunding works so well then what do developers need production companies for? it's possible, but i don't think highly likely that this is actually happening, but you know that thing about "text voice" and "knowing who anons are" with nothing more than language, spelling and syntax? yeah... i do agree, it's a strong maybe that this is actually happening.

but there is a FUCK TON of content on the RSI site and in the forums. if you have a question i promise you it's been asked there. but just know that there are a fuckload of entitled whiney brats and bitches and the complaining there is ceaseless. but, it has also really helped to make this game an outstanding project. The community play testing has had direct impact on how the game has changed over the last year and going forward. normally all of this would be internal QA on a build the public would never see, and the 10 or so people in QA would determine if stuff is fun, bad, good, boring, terrible or perfect. as it is there's more like 10,000 people who play regularly and so. many. people. are vocal about their game play experience. So the devs are very upfront about how much this input has help to mold their design decisions, and they-none of them in the interviews they do-have ever had this point in game design crowd sourced by so many people, and they really want it to continue.

So if you're having fun or think something is BAD, then go to the forums and post about it. it WILL absolutely be read, they have staff who's job it is to sort the golden nuggets from the shit-pile. If you have game play ideas or think some feature in game would be cool go post it in the game ideas sub, it will be read and possibly disseminated through the company. They often take community suggestions, example:

why is there sound in space?
player concern thread: FUK THIS! Why is there SOUND in GOD DAMNED SPACE!? This is RUINING THE GAME FOR ME AND HARMING MY CHILDREN!@
dev response: well, it's for immersion and to really give a full and exciting experience to the player, it's something we want but we know it's not technically correct that you can hear an enemy ship explode off in the distance.
community suggestion: it'd be pretty easy to explain this "in fiction" by saying that ships all have hi-fi sterio systems that simulate sounds in a way that gives you a perception of direction to aid the pilots during dogfights. even my headphones can simulate a 3d space pretty decently and this is supposed to be 900 years in the future.
dev response: we're going to go with this idea. thanks bud.
concerned player: IF YOU DON'T MAKE THIS FEATURE A TOGGLEABLE TOGGLE THEN MY WIFE WILL EXPLODE WITH HERNIAS!@

also, r04r, there's a whole bunch of xml setting and things to fuck around with that people have dicked around with and there will be an API at some point down the line that should allow for some pretty interesting things for someone with your background. possibly even an in-game "cellphone" app API for the futuristic cellphone like device called Mobiglass which is like a holographic cellphone operating system with a lot of planned features. one community suggestion was to allow players to write apps and i think the devs took it seriously because they are making the first crop of apps that will be used in game and have built a modular system that could possibly be used by players.

it's how they let us do custom ship paintjobs in the future. the system is in engine now, too, actually. so if you get interested in following the development and possibly even contributing ideas then know that whatever you post on the RSI forums will be read by person who's job it is to vet your idea, and not just a mod to see if it's CP.

tits are good, you know that
i should have said best info from the RSI site aggregates to the reddit sub anyway so you can skip wading through manchild threads.

this game does attract a lot of manchildren it seems.
everyone wants to play out their boyhood dream of being han solo,
and so the average age of the community is something like 35 last polled

this is actually quite fun because there's a large contingent of players that post threads like "i quit gaming 10 years ago and haven't touched even a console game in all that time, and i'm here to play Star Citizen!!!!"

then they post threads like, "HELP! How the hell to i not get obliterated OVER and OVER in Arena Commander?!"

and it's like lrn2fly noob

a quick word on Mouse and Keyboard

don't sweat a joystick at all r04r, many many people prefer the mouse and keyboard setup over anything else, it's really pretty good. many of the "top players" use m&k exclusively. Also it'll be 40% FPS gameplay, so you'll be using it a lot and keeping consistence with controllers isn't a bad thing.

Lonestar the Kilrathi quadruple-posted this 11 years ago, 9 minutes later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #517,616

a quick word on the development of the overall project:

it's still pretty rough in some places. there's a fair amount of texture pop in from time to time in your hangar
and it can definitely be buggy. there is a bug report section in the RSI forums where you can submit casual bug reports, or very detailed reports if you're so inclined. There are some known bugs, and not every ship system is connected into the ship's internal pipeline and there are some placeholder textures that will ultimately become working displays in your cockpit. The AI is pretty good, but players are finding weaknesses all the time. However, the AI devs are actively tracking match data and improving the AI to keep up with tricky players. it's getting pretty fucking smart. There have been instances of crashes, but mostly Crash to Desktop and they are growing more and more infrequent.
it's still early alpha and very much will change. nothing is set in stone, and even the Ship you already own could potentially change in stats, art, or capability. motion capture is also only just begun so some animations are placeholders even. but there have been many improvement there already and player models look a little less like uptight pricks with sticks up their asses.

that being said this game already eclipses just about everything else i've seen in my life as far as graphics are concerned. at 4k it's fucking glorious, at 1080p without AA it can look jaggy. AA will be implemented eventually, but forcing it is possible, just very graphically intense right now. the fidelity floors me.

Externally hosted imageArena Commander v1.0 release today too

the Mustang, pictured, has 4 variants with different specialties. Omega is a racer, Delta is a combat ship, etc.
the Avenger was added, it's an interceptor, or fast dogfighter with anti-bomber capability.
the Cutlass was added. technically a 2 seater, the second "seat action" is currently disabled but the ship is flight ready and you can solo it in AC. it's now the largest currently flyable ship and looks awesome with gaping holes in the side (that will eventually allow you to FPS your way in to perform boarding actions like murder.)
All of the hornet variants are added, a stealth ship, a dog fighter, a civilian trader, and i think another one, idk. they are specialty militaryish ships.
All the Auroras are in as well. i have lost count of ships and all their base variants.

new missiles were added, different signature tracers essentially. heat, radar, etc.
new signature system implemented, meaning those missiles can see you and you have the ability to counter their sight by altering your signature outputs (eventually, for now use chaff and flares)

actually i'll have to read the pilots manual because the missile system is revamped completely and the signal-noise ratio stuff for the signature system is pretty intricate. it looks like chaff can be used to kind of like cloak you... :D

the Aurora is being used to prototype all the new HUD element changes that will make each ship unique with a variety of displays. So right now the Aurora is the most sophisticated of all the ships as far as design is concerned.

yeah, on big patch/release days the servers get bogged down. i won't be playing v1.0 until tomorrow. And actually there's apparently been some issues logging in to the game and with lobby bugs. i think they've had to disable invites and are working on the server side fix to correct the login issues. so i don't think we're missing much action quite yet. i think service is spotty which is not unusual right after a patch. There will probably be a small hot fix in the next day or so or something like that. but you'll be playing it tomorrow.

tip: fun goal for Free Flight Mode - after you've learned the standard controls fly around the Broken Moon map and find the landing pad (it's next to the gigantic terraforming platform. use CAPS LOCK to toggle Coupled Mode and figure out how to strafe up/down, left/right, front back. approach the landing pad and as you float yourself down your landing skids will deploy and magnets will hold your ship to the landing pad. once you've landed hit the 'f' key to exit your ship. once your out of your ship use the mouse scroll wheel to draw your pistol and you can then shoot your ship and destroy it i guess.

i think everyone has a pistol now? anyway, if not it's still challenging to land and you have mag boots to walk around with that you can turn on and off and you've got a rudimentary jetpack or something i think.

day after patch day bug report:

there are some connectivity issues they are working through. you can be disconnected during loading and it sometimes crashes as a result. normally i can play without crashes but patches introduce bugs.

a brief word on loading the game:

it can take a while and the loading scree is animated and the framerate drops to 1 sometimes and makes it seem crashed. unless you get a message you have crashed then you're loading. i have an SSD and it still takes a while.

PSA on launch issues from CIG dev

Hey everyone!

As many of you have experienced, we have been having some issues with not being able to connect to servers properly tonight. This is something that we are fully aware of and actively working on.

As a temporary fix the servers will automatically restart every 30 minutes. This will take place at the top of the hour and at 30 minutes into the hour(3:00, 3:30, 4:00, 4:30, 5:00, and so on). When the servers restart it may cause you to disconnect from the game, but you should be able to immediately re-connect. We understand that this is a major inconvenience and are working on a more permanent solution as quickly as possible.

We appreciate how awesome and understanding everyone has been while we work on this. The electricity resonating from this community is absolutely off the charts, and we are just as excited as you are to dive in.

We do not currently have an ETA for a permanent fix but will keep you posted.

If you run into a connection issue that does not match the above mentioned, then try the following:
-Delete your USER folder and retry
-In launcher settings "Reset to Default" and restart launcher
-In launcher settings make sure language is set to "English"

Thanks again!

edit: We are aware that the restarts are not allowing everyone to get back in. This is being worked on.

The game runs really slowly on my computer, and I have spent more time looking at loading screens than actually playing the game over the past half hour. It also crashes most of time when i try to pick any of the arena commander options. Why didn't you mention that the game is super buggy? I mean I guess that comes with the territory of being in alpha, but I've bought several other games as an early backer and they were at least playable.

I managed to get in and start a free flight and the next ten minutes of nothing were pretty fun as it locked my entire fucking computer down and I had to try and get it back

this is the worst example of early access I've ever been a part of

i didn't know the latest patch had server side connectivity issues that are causing crashes. i did mention the game has crashes to desktop but they are less than before. however this latest patch has new problems to sort through. it's not unusual for the game to need server side fixes and small patches within days of a major release. it'll get better, the previous release was much more stable. this one will get there soon.

but i agree, the current prolems have made the game practivally unlaunchable. also contact lists are bugging out and they have them disabled while they correct the issues on their end.

not unusual, it has always improved quickly in the past. i'm sorry i convinced y'all to pledge on a patch weekend, last week it was stable as a rock. but this new patch is actually a new development branch that they are working to bring online. it'll take a little time, but i expect problems to get worked out within a couple of days.

all i'd ask is be patient. i'll gladly buy your game back from you if you remain dissatisfied, but hold on until the major blockers are corrected before making up your mind. once the game is playable again and you find your computer can't handle it, you don't like it, or decide it's not your thing just let me know and i'll buy your $20 package back.

I kinda have to be patient because I can neither start nor play the game.

this is correct. other org mates at TEST say they get a few minutes to play before a server disconnect then a crash. so this is a widespread problem.

i just want to shoot my aurora with a pistol. evidently you can take one out in half a dozen shots. so pistols are OP. people at TEST are talking about doing coop vanduul swarm mode with ejected pilots and pistols once the server fixes are done.

so that's the new meta. can't wait to kill someone in PvP with pistols and swag.

the last time the servers did this there was a memory leak somewhere and they'd reset every 3 hours because that's how long it took to overflow or whatever. i'm guessing the problems are maybe similar? Last time they had it fixed in 2 days, but the game is twice as large at least now than it was then.

you'd actually probably enjoy watching some of the videos they've done where they get into extreme technical detail about the systems they are building. you'd probably understand it, i was just like, "this is so over my head i'm just going to trust reddit will know if it's double-speak or not." it wasn't.

they do a weekly show called Around the Verse (AtV) and they do a segment halfway through called BugSmashers where the lead, um... bug fixer guy sits down and explains the process of finding a bug, determining the problem, and correcting it. It's interesting but i usually skip it because it's out of my depth.

Other people might enjoy the segment where they talk to the lead designers and producers who discuss design plans and game mechanics in a lot of detail. this is where you hear about the extent of development in the parallel branches that we don't see until they release the build to the public for bug testing and server stress testing. That's where you see clips from FPS gameplay and learn about the persistent universe development and the single player mode.

anyway, thanks for being patient, y'all. i know it's frustrating, but each build is getting better and better... once they are playable.
just be glad you weren't here for the initial release of the .8 build, you could feel the mad emanating from your modem it had so many problems. but every single one of those has since been totally fixed.

New information regarding login issues:

some people have stated that the game has "magically started working for them" in the last couple of hours. Many, many people are still having issues, but the issue appears to be resolved for some people. They are loading into and playing games.

The Illfonic studio in Canada is responsible for the servers over the next week and are working on fixes to stabilize the servers. no ETA on a permanent fix yet but it sounds like they have some idea what it'll take to resolve the problem.
