Condition deteriorating somewhat. It's spread into my lungs. My abdominal and chest muscles are severely sore and prone to spasming due to coughing. I've lost about 6lbs and am a bit gaunt looking. I'm in bed now with a large glass of brandy listening to The Cure and reading The Rise and Fall of Communism by Archie Brown.

Slept fitfully dreaming of general secretaries and central committees and stagnating economies. The more I think about it, Fascism (or at least Nazism) and Communism have a lot in common despite being supposed polar opposites. The common denominator is statism: does it really matter if the means of production is privately owned if it's at the mercy of the State? Both ideologies are framed in ideas of national rebirth, of purification, of making a new man. Both were supposed to last a thousand years (or more, since communism represents the end of history and is supposed to last literally forever). Both had political enemies locked up in camps (indeed, in East Germany former concentration camps like Sachsenhausen were used for this immediately after being liberated). I guess the Communists never had a racial ideology and didn't try to kill everyone in the camps, so that's a plus.
Oh, and both aimed for world domination. At some point I'll post about why Communism is not "anti-imperialist" at all.
Either way, I'm glad both are thoroughly discredited now!

There's a term for that, it's call the horseshoe theory. The basic idea is that, as per your example, supposedly opposite idealogies start to become more similar the more exteme they get.

That's also why I'm so skeptical about WWII being "the good war". The Nazis were evil, yes, but the Soviets had the gulags and the Holodomor, and after the war many concentration camps were turned right back around and placed into use as NKVD "special camps". I doubt that meant summer camp. Meanwhile, America and Canada locked up all the Japanese-Americans into somewhat nicer --concentration-- internment camps. There was no intent to exterminate them, of course, they were just deprived of their civil rights, property, and dignity by executive order. Really all of the major players had considerable blood on their hands, and I abhor them all. Roosevelt, Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin differed only by degree. Does America being the least evil make her the hero?

I do wonder about this. If you could get, say, a million followers of George Lincoln Rockwell's American Nazi Party and a million followers of Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam in an empty country, what would they do? Would they equitably draw a line down the center and say "this half is black man's land, this half is white man's land", build a wall, and live forever in separation and harmony, or would they try to start exterminating each other? If there were Jews, or some third ethnicity both would turn against them as the cause of all strife but if it was 50/50 black and white in a vacuum I really have no idea how they'd react. I guess eventually both halves would say "it's no fair they get half the land, we need living space!" and war would break out.

actually it kind of does, you can't judge history by today's standards without introducing a lot of bias. you can say the greeks were more civilized than barbarians without introducing today's biases and resigning yourself to considering both groups barbarians.
