In a study conducted at the University of Florida, where Native-English bilinguals were compared with English monolinguals, it was found that although there was no difference in accuracy between the two groups, there was an evident slower response rate from bilinguals compared to monolinguals on tasks that involve latency of recognition of a list of abstract words and lexical decision tasks.[12]

I guess because the language part of their brain is trying to manage twice as much language as a monolingual person's? What is a Native-English bilingual? I thought bilingual was where you had native fluency in two languages (as opposed to learning an additional language later in life). I guess I'll be checking my monolingual privilege.

On further consideration, I'd take being bilingual in English and Spanish over the extra speed in abstract words and lexical decision making. I think the extra utility of speaking another language (especially in Texas where Spanish is the first language of a large minority of people) would be better than speed.
