Guess I'm taking the ShitAss troll bait but I read it and I thought Della came off as a bit of a racist "As a white person, I know I can put my feelings aside and take my finals but my fellow non-white students can't! As a white person, it's my burden to speak out on their behalf because they have no agency or free will!" Not a direct quote but that's the vibe I got off of it.

I once saw it nicely summed up as "trying so hard not to be racist that they look racist". I think it's a common thing with this sort of mindset, since they place so much importance on race, they wind up doing "othering" in a somewhat similar fashion to racists.
Though, I will say, the professor could have elaborated a bit. Any refusal would probably provoke disapproval from this crowd, but at least he wouldn't come off as dismissive.
