The image you posted is actually a triptych (lol) called "The Last Judgment" by Hans Memling. You're missing the portions of the painting to the left and right, which add most of the effect. It's actually a really, really cool painting if you know the story behind it and you can analyze it. We discussed it in our world history class, among several other works of art, when we went through the Renaissance period.

I like Memling's version better, but that is just because i think it is more interesting. It has the archangel Michael weighing souls on a scale to see whether they should be sent to heaven or hell, then either side of the triptych representing peoples' fate, being led up stairs into a beautiful kingdom filled with important biblical figures, or being cast into a fiery vortex with demons.
