I have fond memories of Ruby and Sapphire, but I have no 3ds to play the remakes

No idea, don't own a 3ds.
I believe it is wireless, though. So you can just be near somebody else with the game and play it together. The last Pokemon I played also had an online multiplayer thing, so this probably does too.

How can you call yourself a proper nerd if you don't own a 3ds?

Psh, please. I own 40K models and comic books. Owning a 3ds is entry-level shit, dude.

Ugh you are the worst kind of nerd. You don't acknowledge your nerd duties to own every piece of nerd hardware. Truly sickening.

It only becomes 'nerd hardware' when it is replaced by a newer model.
@OP
I do not, and don't plan to. I'm kind of a purist. In my opinion, monster design took a bit of a down turn with Gen III and it's since gotten out of hand. I'm also not a fan of 3D stuff. GBA is as far as I go.

Aren't you more comfortable with the re-makes, then? Since the re-use those older Pokemon.
That's why I personally would consider buying these ones. It's the same, familiar stuff I played as a kid. Nostalgia value, and all that.

Is it good?

its in your pokegear type of thing, when you connect to wifi the pokegear will automatically list people who are playing all over the world and will display a chunk of those groups in your "passer-by" display thing
shit nigga just use youtube

It'd still require me to get new hardware and buy the games etc. I'd rather just keep playing LeafGreen and Sapphire on my SP.

Gotta agree with that. GBA Pokemon were the best (particularly Emerald). Platinum, Heart Gold and Soul Silver were great, Black and White mediocre and X/Y were subpar in my opinion. Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby the best remakes though.

It's all in 3D this time around, innit?
I mean the stereoscopic 3D effect... I know the graphics are mostly 3D..
In Pokemon X/Y the 3D is only seen in certain parts of the game and in certain areas the effect stays on (almost as if to say "BUY THE NEXT GAMES!!") ...
I had read it would be like that in those early 3D pokemon games just to save battery life... What is the situation now in OR/AS? Did they figure the NEW 3DS' stereoscopic effect works cheaply enough (batterywise) now?? Or are they expecting me to play less Pokemon? Am I supposed to just turn off the 3D manually if I am running low on power???
Nintendo expects a lot from gamers these days... I remember when having 2 buttons that 'don't do anything in the game' was pushing it..
Are gamers becoming smarter? Or is Nintendo just more willing to let players experiment these days?
