This was a friend of mine, it was 2004, nobody (in the media, elsewhere) had heard of Tor yet!

It's all NSA tech anyway, so back then, yeah everyone had suspicions.

Not NSA technology. NRL technology. Not my area of expertise. Butttttt back a few years ago AT&T sent me to schools lots of Bell lab schools located in New Jersey and Sacramento and SF San Jose schools that AT&T runs and then on to Cisco corp for their stuff.

Frankly I wanted NO part of taking those courses at the time and only took them because a company I wanted to be hired to work for directly told me I had more then they could ask for but NO telco Engineering level experience - (That person later got fired by me after I ended up hired but not because they chose not to hire me)

I spent months in study as kiddlet with the Bell System Technical journals that spell out ever detail one needs to know about Telco and Internet interface. The Onion being much the same as current Tor - Classes were just a few years b4 Tor hit the web. Later looked at it for work reasons and said oh sure sure as if any one packet can hit a Cisco router and not end up logged. Packets have so much info at beginning middle and end so as to Collate then Parse and have LookC is just not that big of a deal for computers a 3 letter US Gov agency owns PLUS all traffic does go through such entry points b4 Agency passes it through to u and me- Not just USA - You should see the installations in Canberra Au and England n n n all over Planet Earth for LookC

Snowden thought he was the 1st to reveal but books have been ritten for years b4 about Project Echelon. This shit goes back to 60's. Tor is just one more reason that such projects keep expanding using anything but servers you and I see as hardware. Its major Supercomputers and servers take up a very small part of the installation. I think if you look at Google Earth you can see the key entry points for Overseas cables right next door to AT&T or the MCI now Verizon buildings - Hint the larger buildings are NOT Telco company buildings

Well his description is off. Firstly almost all webmail systems log in through SSL and most do all their webmail viewing through SSL too. So they wouldn't know someone is using that webmail unless they embed an IMG file in an email (something eBay and PayPal constantly do) to spy on the IP. Even then, Tor switches IPs a lot and if someone is really fearful then they can close and reopen Tor.

You Miss-understood my point - Access points to head end of Net which are very limited points - Very few tier one companies are head end ISP points - They are either Co-located with US Gov equipment that Passes the traffic through their system b4 it gets to Head end OR its at all Overseas cable access points so it passes through US Gov equip b4 it moves on to Tier 1 ISP.

Why not hit Net and look up Project Echelon and then follow a system diagram for full net connect - That is the business they are in. 60 Mins TV has covered multiple times over the years and systems in therms of size continue to skyrocket in size even has technology makes stuff smaller - Only recently did Snowden disclose a system not yet covered in disclosers
