Topic: is surfing difficult

Anonymous A started this discussion 12 years ago #38,582

i snowboard every so often and snowboarding to me is much harder than skiiing or skateboarding, in particular because you cant "lean" into whatever direction you want to go, what about surfing? at least with a snowboard your feet are bolted in, skateboards have griptape etc

so what the fuck

Surfing is very hard, which brings up the question...oh nevermind.

I said nothing about him. Yes surfing is hard, very hard.

Inb4 syntax starts with his ten myle surfing stories and how he surfed a ten foot tide, and how he surfed with someone famous.

I only surfed a surfstream (google it, basically an artificial wave) and it was piss easy with my 10+ years background in skateparks (bmx mostly but skating to a great extend as well, specially vert ramps).

Anyway, people told me real waves are a tiny bit harder to get on than getting onto the surfstream. Even tho, after a day of riding I was bombdropping into the stream... man I miss Sundsvall.

actually it's not hard. i only ever surfed hawaii and cali, but once you know how to stand up and not fall off you're good. turning is probably the hardest part but you don't really turn like snowboarding.

i'm sure surfing at a high level, like competitive surfing would be hard, but average joe surfing is about as hard as wakeboarding or water skiing.

OP Most sorry about the MC fool who posts as if Surfing is something difficult - A good example of how a bad Troll can ruin the possibility of a great experience for Others he is unable to walk much so its Electric Hoverround for him or his Methaphorical stuck in a basement life no matter where he lives.
> i snowboard every so often and snowboarding to me is much harder than skiiing or skateboarding, in particular because you cant "lean" into whatever direction you want to go, what about surfing?

You wood find it easy - You can even in advance learn the basic balance on a board without any water - can be done on a lawn - Home made easy as any flat piece of wood wood work. Will put up series of photos - I only tried a set up months after learning in my Ocean a Blue. No lessons but lessons wood have made sense but around here locals are ultra willing to offer tips UNLESS conditions are super great and then of course its them vs the Waves and nothing else counts

Its only about basic balance which can be improved on any balance ball in any gym. Gyms also have balance boards mostly for rehab therapy. In the Ocean without any pre lessons its just try and get up and not fall off and you fall off and off and off and then that magic moment where you stay UP n quickly fall off - One hour later you are up longer - two hours and a minute or two longer - That's all there is to it. Some learn super fast IF they have as DasSheeple Skatepark experience or just lots of Skateboard experience - THE ONLY difference is really having less control at the GetGo
> in particular because you cant "lean" into whatever direction you want to go,
Nor can you do that when Surfing unless totally major experience and then its often a wipe out because even Pros get tripped off the board by cross winds. Riding over Rip Tides also ends up in unexpected Wipe Outs Butttttttt so wot!!! Its only water a foot or 3 or 4 feet to fall off of and In2 - Just plain FUN FUN FUN on a WipeOut - Snowboarding or Skiing fall can end up with some Ice burn or as me just once bleeding from face and even then I got up laffin.

tl;dr? Its EASY to learn YOU will find it VERY Easy and at worst you fall in2 soft water and smile and laff and try again - squeegee is Spot on and damn accurate

DasSheeple Surfstream Take a look at a Map of So Cal. Cardiff by the Sea Me and Surfstream where designed and manufactured is Solana Beach - Their shop is a 5 minute walk for me just South - Was invited along with everyone on my beach to trek up 45 minutes North of here to Laguna Beach and try it for a day as Beta testers. The guys are Surfers but rare to see them anymore here because they Surf mostly Del Mar but usually working like crazy to build the business - The key difference between their device and the Ocean is Wind and currents unexpected - Wot I tried had several settings for different levels of difficulty - Understand they now have more but the set up at factory is to often in R&D to give factory Surfstream a try these days.

Now for some illustrative photos to show how fast n simple the balance can be learned -

Set up like these are costly like $300 and common to see on beach with Surf lesson people who do this for a living to teach

And if she can do it anyone can - Bet she was not sober and still was able to stand up on the board

With Edit

She is not really in the water. At edge on Sand on a trainer board stuck on sand

That looks like major fun... back in sundsvall I was dropping in like this dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZkJu2ey-Vc

But I was doing it from the pool edge (from dry surface) with a higher drop (was dropping into the wave from around 1.5 meters). Also, carving the wave is far more fun than carving street with a skateboard, but way more tricky. Also, skating vert is ultimately IMHO way better. You can't compare flying out 1-2 meters above coping in a vert ramp to carving around on a wave.

Anyway @OP it shouldn't be too hard for you, go for it!

> carving street with a skateboard

Over all those years as you did how often did you end up bloody? My skateboard experience is very limited so I did not have that advantage you had. You tube video is very similar to my experience except I did flip off the wave on my first turn in2 it and wipe out. 2nd n 3rd the same. Then got A-OK after that- Later in day they cranked up the wave action and I did ok but on the full ramp up I felt like a rank beginner again. In the factory and that was 8 months ago they demo some Wind Action for contest stuff. Company is planning on putting in installations in Gyms all around Planet Earth. Can be done in a Sporting Goods store but costs of the stuff runs $750,000 or so for a small set up. Kinda like climbing walls its a slow go and then all of a sudden every gym has them.

I am 95% set up to Ski a week next week and wood leave on Friday but only for travel and rest and start my downhill skiing on Monday when everyone else is off the mountain -

HOWEVER - Here the Waves are Expected 2 B just Super 2.1 to 3 Meters on Friday Soooooo my flight plan will skip a bit and I might just go from Super Surfing to plane ride to slopes and find a Black rated run and go crazy - might die but wood die happy LoL

Not much from skateboarding actually... was never big into street skating besides doing ollies and get from A to B as fast as possible. On the other hand, when I skate vert, I get a helmet and knee pads so I can slide in if I'm bailing, pretty much no injuries from that (mostly cause I don't do too many tricks on a skateboard, I just love flying around).

BMX on the other hand gave me a ton of scars, but then again... BMX is my true passion out of all the action sports, and I rode and still ride it on a few levels above everything else I do in my life...

Just one permanent scar and that is from a faceplant while down hill skiing but it ends up looking like any other age line in face so even I cannot find it anymore. Never did BMX other then going to see pro events. I used to do shit on bikes but never trick shit. I suspect bike balance has a lot to do with my quick ability to learn to Surf - For sure it did Nada for me on my first downhill ski attempts - but world class lessons from Club Med in Copper Mountain from French teachers sure did. They teach the wonderful French method - No ridge is ever 2 steep - One could in theory do ok on a 90degree slope and I mean a fulL 90 top to bottom. Just parallel to slope and turn to slow n reverse -

Good place to jam this in - Prior to skiing and for good reasons said I wood NEVER do that in my life time cause back at Hughes Malibu Research lab days - hallways wood be filled during winter with people on crutches because back then one had to tie on2 skies with no release system- lots of broken bones - A fear of mine. So one day I am at a party and all are talking about ski trips n me bored so I say wots the deal about skiing and best friends wife says - Its a lot like SEX - and the girl next to her said Sometimes its wayyy better then Sex

My brain said - WTF? Got2 try it - Not saying its true but it sure can be a day(s) of pure orgasmic thrills fun. And hours of lead to Endorphin rush like runners high except most of my face plants were at end of day where most accidents happen do to that Endorphin rush - Sonny Bono lost his head literally as a result of Endorphin rush at end of day skiing when his last run was a tree run and he got 2close n personal with his last tree as intimate as could b

Was one hell of a good guy and one truly silly US Congressman.

er no not that I can remember

Skiing on the other hand Yes yes. And reason for knowing Sonny was for multiple reasons from days of Music when he used MCA stuff to days I tried my best to lobby him when he was US Congressman ( I failed to change his Republican made up mind) and when he ran a ok Italian restaurant in Palm Springs. Nice guy funny guy butttttt and ok skiier and I was in Dubbo Australia when he lost his haid
