The polls here are useful when you want "statistics" rather than verbose replies. The board primarily revolves around the discussions, but, while separated, the polls have become a very important part of this place. Topics and polls are often combined, with topics being created about polls and polls being inspired by previous discussions. The board even supports and aids you in doing this.
While anyone caught lying in polls (such as voting in both "females only" and "males only" polls) will be immediately banned permanently, there is absolutely no guarantee that the polls are accurately answered. Unfortunately, there are lots of idiots out there who like to ruin everything. Always keep in mind that some answers/votes may be lies. Troublemakers get all their poll votes removed retrospectively, but that assumes that they are found out in normal discussions or in some other way. It is very much more difficult to detect "trolls" when all they do is vote rather than type a text. As you probably can imagine, certain kinds of polls are more likely to receive fake votes than others.
As you may have noticed, the results of each poll is immediately shown, before the person votes. This is done with full awareness of the potential bias it will result in, because it is believed that the fact that you don't have to vote or follow an extra link to see the results will actually result in less "fake" votes that are done "out of spite" because the Web site makes them waste their time when they just want to see a result rather than voting themselves. It is believed that while some people will change their minds depending on the current results, perhaps without even realizing it, this system, while certainly not perfect by any means, is ultimately at least for the better in most cases.
Update: As of 2010-08-14, it is possible to choose whether you want your poll to be "secretive" or not when you create it. It still defaults to "open".
The "spotlight" feature is basically "bumping for polls", although a poll must be spotlighted manually and doesn't get "pushed to the top" when voted in or when created.
Each "poster" can only vote once in each poll (regardless of any changes in the IP address) and votes cannot be retracted or changed later. Take your time and think your choice through!
