Does anyone use them? Can anyone recommend one? I have some serious data (life's work) that I already backup in two places, one of which is a physical external hard drive. I would like to include a cloud service. Thank you.

The primary question is if you want backup or remote mirrors. Most cloud services are mirrors, not backups. The difference is that with a backup that once you write data to it, you cannot delete or modify that version. This protects you against viruses and hackers. There are not a lot of services that offer secure off-site storage with versioning built in, though. I will assume you do not care about this a whole lot, because most consumers generally don't.
Google Drive and Dropbox are the easy & obvious options, they dont give you a lot of free storage but you can pay them to give you more. You should be ready to pay in any case, because you are not going to get good service for free. It's just not going to happen.
Your monthly/yearly cost will vary greatly depending on how much data you intend to store. I would need a guesstimate of the amount of data you intend to store before I can give good advice, but:
1) You can get unlimited data storage with dropbox for 12 euro/month. They advertise "unlimited file recovery & version history" which does sound good, but I have no idea how that works out in practice.
2) You can pay-as-you-go with amazon s3 or glacier. This can work out to be quite a lot cheaper than dropbox up until a certain point. They also charge for bandwidth, and restoring is generally more expensive than backing up. Before you pick this it is adviceable to do some math to estimate your costs.
3) You can use CrashPlan, they offer similar services as dropbox but at $42/year. They are more backups than a synced directory which dropbox is. I dont have any experience with them but have heard a lot of positive things about them.
4) Personally I like rsync.net. They're a tad expensive, but a massive discount is available for readers of news.ycombinator.net, just email [email protected] asking about the HN reader discount and you'll be paying $0.09/gb/month instead of $0.20/gb/month (not pay-as-you-go, you pay for a quota which acts as an upper limit that you can adjust at any time, minimum 20gb). Rync.net also does not charge for bandwidth, or for restores. Still relatively expensive depending on how much data you store, but they're rock solid and perfect for nerds like me.
So yeah, your best choice totally depends on the amount of data that you need to store, how often you think you need to retrieve it, and how much you're willing to spend.

For $9.99/month you can get Office 365 for 5 machines, and each machine gets 1TB of storage on OneDrive... so $9.99/month gets you 5TB on OneDrive...

Also another option I should mention is one for people who are somewhat capable manage VPSes (so linux): There are many cheap VPS providers that will give you a server with 100-500GB of storage for only a few dollar a month. This can be a good idea depending on the data, but in general is less good for long-term storage because you're not entering in a contract with a storage provider plus they'll likely just delete your data if you miss a payment. But if you are willing to spend more effort on backups this can also be a cheap option. Not sure I'd recommend it (as your only backup) though.

b: Best truly safe back up - Two external hard drives. One in the business/household and one off site. There are multiple scenarios for how one handles the off site hard drive. Friends including small business owners can use personal exchange locations. Here in California because of Earthquakes, its best to have the off site hard drive back, up in another part of the state or a state near by. Mine is in Las Vegas Nevada and only business data and software are transferred via a dedicated line to Vegas. Fun stuff goes to Free Google account(s)
My current subject to change view on Cloud as storage, is in flux. I need to see a Cloud that is fully encrypted before I trust it with all of my personal information - Main concern for me is clients data and personally my investment stuff.
Dropbox was not only hacked it has had a number of DROP OUTS Service unavailable - Its had full on Data breaches where account info was pulled and most of its customers spammed on email accounts. Of course software glitches happen. Bumps in road, but Drop Box has been hacked in Past Years and recently it just like Apple's iCloud, Not hacked exactly Why has no one here mentioned the recent APPARENT HACK of iCloud?
Most recently Dropbox and iCloud were fully accessed without hacking directly. Ask Jennifer Lawrence, about the phishing scam, which let hackers use her iCloud log in password. iCloud and Dropbox have been hit with passwords to pull out data obtained by phishing other data bases to compile passwords and parse them in2 a hack password data base. Last month Dropbox discovered another attempt at suspicious log in attempts and Ordered all users to change their passwords. (Which is a good idea anyway)
Me? Yes I use Google but NOT for sensitive data. Google data limitations? That's just silly given for personal stuff one can set up multiple Google accounts - Business name personal name etc. Just fun unimportant stuff Nothing I wud fear someone grabbing my password and looking at my account. Microshit offers the same basic Free but has warnings and limitations and you must read the fyne print top to bottom and end up shocked at wot MicroShit does not allow - and if you break your promise YOU can lose it all.
Anything you currently put on the Cloud best be stuff you have no fear of some outsider getting access2

Now I retract that because one of my banks JP Morgan Chase with a so called super secure two-factor authentication system, was hacked with massive number of user accounts stolen - Chase notified me that The hackersonly got my name address telco numbers and email addy's. Sure enough my business email accounts end up with more spam all of a sudden.
So now I say No total Cloud for me until they offer full end to end Encryption. Microsoft has offered me 'DasSheeple Microshit alpha/beta 365 fully Encrypted but they warn they want to test it on a variety of outboard systems/users and want feedback and then it goes away and back to regular 365 until they have fully designed it for marketplace. Google also says they soon will offer a trial fully Encrypted Cloud.
Bottom line: Put nothing on any Cloud unless you use just ONE Password which is not shared anywhere else on any net log in ITEM Use a password manager and never use the same password on anything unless you are willing to let Phishers have a free pass (pun intended) If Phishers can hack JP Morgan you can be sure they can hack your accounts.
Other then that the Cloud as storage is a great idea that will one day come of age. For Computing its been around b4 the Internet existed. Me? One hell of a store IF one is careful - but serious bargain's and the pic price is just today's loss leader - Place is loaded with refurbished full warranty stuff BUT also a huge number of top name brands that are models as just yesterdays models and Lenovo for instance today - $168 laptop with huge 10.1 inch screen - Its refurb and probably yesterdays model - Every possible router and switch boxes n stuff no radio shack wud have - Cables and adapters at ultra fair prices. One can still by one resistor and rows of build it yourself computer parts -Coffee makers n Frig's and huge array of security stuff good for homes but mostly business's - My home is 100% Fry's mixed junk for cameras-recorders sensors etc
So I see a boxed as NEW 4TB hard drive for $100 and put it on a shelf - 6 months ago. Decided to open the box just last week and wtf? 2TB - Call store and they say bring it in but you will have to pay $20 more because it was marked $25 to low LOL - Law of course is on my side - just looked at today's add and its $129 - Model number is correct for 4TB yet with 2TB label - Do I try it just to see? If I go to the store it means I end up spending lots for stuff I do not really need. Irresistible bargains - Also that ad link is probably no good for on line buys- They depend on loss leaders to get people like me to spend money on the fly as I walk on through wot is maybe 4 times larger then a BIG Best Buy store.

I ended up going with Backblaze because they accept Paypal. I hate credit cards and refuse to use them. It is doing the initial backup right now, which couldtake a week or more.

Couple of quick points. I hate Paypal insisting on my bank account information. Full routing number address home telco etc - When I have to do it I do and then after transaction is completed I delete that account information.
If you live in USA? Using a Credit card has serious advantages over your life time. Many good reasons to hate them and some really good reasons to learn to live with them and take advantage of them.
Its near impossible for the average person to build up a good credit score without credit cards and a history of good credit with each company. For instance if you wanted to buy a home one day the interest you pay on a home or a car loan or any loan is going to depend on your earned credit score. Not have a good score can be costly
Wot I do is pay off each balance and never carry a loan on each card. Betting that this year because of my listed score - I have accepted new cards with cash paid by the credit companies - Each year for last 4 years or so about 500/yr free cash. Bank accounts the same thing except that seems to be coming close to an end with perhaps $750/yr last year and this year only $250 and if Chase bank is correct I can cancel one bank account and wait 6 months for another invitation to open a new account and take their $200 or $250. Could be a lot more buttttt banks want to much in deposits to make it worthwhile or direct deposits which does work but I am running out of those.

Bet that bad shit was from those with inability to pay the monthly minimum fee. Then it can get brutal - For instance. A quality Credit Card company may offer a very low interest charge per month if you do not pay off the balance. So for Example Capitol one which in my opinion is the Best overall Credit Card (currently for anyone who applies)
Interest rate is 13% per month on balance - BUTTTT if you miss the minimum payment that rate jumps to 23% and stays there!!! and that is true for just about any good credit card in USA - Can start out at 10% for the first 6 months then move to 13% after you are sucked in and jump to 25% if you miss a minimum payment
Now no clue about Eu? But the other great thing about Capitol One is - NO LIMIT - You get cash back of 1.5% on everything charged.- And They and Chase JPMorgan offer one Ring pick up on customer service with real bankers not some call service in Philippines or India. Bankers who can offer lots of help and service and even a VP might pick up the call and offer even more service!
I use a Fidelity credit card - probably not avail to just anyone? They give me 2% Cash back no limit on anything purchased - and I use a Bank o America card for some things because they give back 3% on some stuff. ALSO Each of those Credit Card companies Paid me cold hard cash to try their card - $100 to $250 a shot - One only $25 but $25 will buy a nice dinner on the credit card company.

Bet that bad shit was from those with inability to pay the monthly minimum fee. Then it can get brutal - For instance. A quality Credit Card company may offer a very low interest charge per month if you do not pay off the balance. So for Example Capitol one which in my opinion is the Best overall Credit Card (currently for anyone who applies)
Interest rate is 13% per month on balance - BUTTTT if you miss the minimum payment that rate jumps to 23% and stays there!!! and that is true for just about any good credit card in USA - Can start out at 10% for the first 6 months then move to 13% after you are sucked in and jump to 25% if you miss a minimum payment
Now no clue about Eu? But the other great thing about Capitol One is - NO LIMIT - You get cash back of 1.5% on everything charged.- And They and Chase JPMorgan offer one Ring pick up on customer service with real bankers not some call service in Philippines or India. Bankers who can offer lots of help and service and even a VP might pick up the call and offer even more service!
I use a Fidelity credit card - probably not avail to just anyone? They give me 2% Cash back no limit on anything purchased - and I use a Bank o America card for some things because they give back 3% on some stuff. ALSO Each of those Credit Card companies Paid me cold hard cash to try their card - $100 to $250 a shot - One only $25 but $25 will buy a nice dinner on the credit card company.
