Which model of Macbook Air are you looking at? The new ones have the Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU which is OK enough for most things.

I am looking at a new one with the 5000. Is it just OK, or is it good? For example, I manipulate lots of large, .raw photographs. Would it be good for that?

Probably will do good enough for the job, but I'd consider a Macbook Pro over a Macbook Air. They have a dedicated NVIDIA GPU which would likely speed things along.
