I can vouch for this. When I was using facebook, I was using the trail name I picked up while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Which was "Bear Shit", I used it for almost a month when facebook deactivated my account. I was not allowed to log on until I put my real name in.
I didn't have to show my license though as proof, so I can't vouch for that.

And they could require proof to prove your name.

And yet, trans users and drag queens have been targeted.

I've had a bunch of fake Facebook accounts, and in my experience they'll only notice if have an obviously offensive name like Shittypants McFartenstein or if you claim to be a celebrity by using their name and pictures. If your fake name is something bland and realistic, they'll never know unless someone complains - and even then they may not give a fuck.

The article Walter cited is about drag queens, and Facebook at some point felt that 'Sister Roma' and 'Lil Miss Hot Mess' were fake names. In terms of the broader discussion I'm just saying that Facebook's name policy loosely and unevenly enforced.
(LOL I just checked and my "Dino Saurus" account is still active with all it's dinosaur pictures and claims I graduated from Dino U.)
