Civil lawsuits are separate from criminal trials, though. Remember OJ was found not guilty of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman's murders, but was still successfully sued for wrongful death by the Goldman family.

Then why are they putting themselves through this? This child was a violent criminal who attempted to take a cops gun to presumably murder him. I mean WTF, if my brother assaulted and tried to kill a cop and was shot for it i would be embarrassed, i mean i'd get my face off TV quick, but not these people, no, they raised and fostered a monstrous psychopath and now they want what? once a cop starts shooting he's going to shoot as many bullets as it takes to kill you. Maybe dude was just a pretty bad shot. i think you misunderstand what lethal force actually IS and how police are trained to utilize it. you don't try to "stun" someone with bullets. If you're required to use that level of force then only one outcome can be expected and it's not to wound them.
And anyway you can obviously see that 5 shots wasn't actually enough to immobilize the guy or even incapacitate them. Because that's not what guns and bullets are designed to do.
