Unified voting bloc and a local political party? If media reports that Ferguson is 2/3rds black are correct, if someone starts a reform party and just over half of Ferguson's eligible black voters form a unified bloc they could sweep the local elections, and easily crush the tiny 1/3rd white vote. With this, they could probably effect some sort of meaningful change in local government and the police, enforcing new policies about use of force, a citizen review board, repealing local ordinances that impact the black community, demilitarizing the police, electing better judges and prosecutors, who knows?
It would have to be, I think, a local and independent party to prevent it getting co-opted by Team Red/Blue. They will need some fairly charismatic, photogenic, and inspired leader but I think this could be pulled off.

It's a start. Better for a nascent political movement to start out small, anyway. Maybe after they win Ferguson they can take it to the county, then St. Louis metro area.

I think the rioting and looting is highly counterproductive. It legitimizes the militarized police response (look at what these people are doing! we have to use tear gas and MRAPs to keep order!) and turns most of America off to their (very legitimate) complaints.
It's a shame, too cause I think with just a bit over half the eligible black voters in Ferguson, they could outvote all of the whites and a small city political campaign would be so easy and cheap to run. It would set a brilliant example of how to stop police militarization and effect real political change. With the officers who killed (really murdered, imo) Eric Garner being let off, the time is right for the black community to rise up and take control of their cities. Real political control, not torching police cars or stealing wigs, but kick the reds and the blues out and really make something happen.
It's just a thought experiment/fantasy I guess. Things will return to the status quo shortly.

I actually agree with you. Accountability would be great. We all know that that isn't going to happen, and police in cities like this are going to continue to be granted a free-pass by the courts on choke-hold deaths, officer-involved-shootings, and tasering-grannies-and-children-to-death no matter how stupid their actions seem after the fact. I actually agree with you. Accountability would be great. We all know that that isn't going to happen, and police in cities like this are going to continue to be granted a free-pass by the courts on choke-hold deaths, officer-involved-shootings, and tasering-grannies-and-children-to-death no matter how stupid their actions seem after the fact. I would love to see some grass-roots action and attention to local affairs by affected communities.
