friday the 28th CIG will offer the Javelin, a battleship, in very limited quantity for a $2500 pledge. only 200 will be offered, and it's likely that only well funded organizations will buy them since they are 20 player+ sized capital ships. this sale will be done to offset the cost of discount entry level game packages that will be sold for $20 bucks. for that $20 you'll purchase a full game package, alpha access, beta access, and you'll get the Aurora starting ship.this is the cheapest buy in that's been offered and it is being offered as part of their anniversary celebration. so if you're on the fence about this game the limited time offer is a real good reason to take the plunge.
when the full game is released it will sell for 60 bucks like any other AAA title, so you'll save a little cash and you'll be eligible for all of the early backer rewards from this point going forward. plus you'll get to play with me, Lonestar the Kilrathi, through alpha, beta, and everything after.

fyi there will be 5000 $20 game packages offered. likely they will sell them in several smaller batches so everyone has a chance to get them.
they will sell out and sell out quickly.
i'm thinking of trying to buy a couple myself to hold onto for friends, and i know other people have the same idea. so if you're interested in knowing more watch this thread and i'll update here when i know what the schedule is for the batch releases.

seriously, this is a great deal y'all. you can't even commit suicide painlessly for under $20, and this game is going to be "the Next Big Thing."

also it appears that the org i belong to, TEST, wants to pick up a javelin so they are scrounging up the money. it's a pretty good group of core players that generate a bunch of OG content. so far they have put together a pretty good fleet with a variety of large multicrew vehicles. now is a great time to get in the game and check out what organizations are doing.
along with self promotion and propaganda TEST sponsors streamers, give-aways, and hosts events like tournaments with prizes and the like. they sell T-shirts, patches, headtrackers (lol) and are having flightsuits made up for the truly hardcore nerds. it's fun, and free if you want it to be. (some orgs, like test, accept donations and have fundraisers. scamming is something to be mindful of, i wouldn't donate to an org this early on, most will die before launch.)

So how much effort is the game in general? If I want to have fun and not really get into it too much, is playing for two or three hours a week enough?

right now yeah, since everything is still alpha everything is still being developed.
so right now you can dogfight and race single seater ships. i usually only play 3-4 hours a week unless theres a patch and i play more.
but, early next year they'll release the FPS portion of the game and we'll get several game modes around that as well.
so right now and for the forseeable future the gameplay is limited to arena style combat as opppsed to any MMO or RPG type gameplay. later in the year there will be a Social Module and Planetside Module that will begin to incorporate the MMO and RPG elements into the game.
so no, it does not require a large time investment now, but that will begin to change as we draw closer to a beta release.

When you say Star Citizen, do you mean as in citizen of the stars, or a citizen who is standout good compared to other citizens?

i'm pretty sure it's Citizen of the Stars. personally i'm not a big fan of the name, when i first read the game title i had no idea what the game was and i had no interest in what sounded like a Heroic Samaritan game. but EA (i think it is) owns the rights to the Wing Commander name and so it can't be called Wing Commander Online or anything like that. but it grows on you after a while.

here's a screen shot of the concept art for the Javelin. It's in grey box right now, so they are fleshing out all of the interior and exterior geometry. It's a capital ship so it will have many rooms and hallways. The game designers take inspiration from modern aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines so the ships all include everything from a captain's bridge, to crew quarters. The Javelin will have a large crew which will man turrets, operate missile defenses, navigate, use comms, act as medics, engineers, pilots, etc. etc. This ship is very large, in the pic the ship taking off from the landing pad is the Gladiator which is a 2 seat torpedo bomber and is pretty big itself. It's hard to judge the scale.
edit: oh yeah, the artist who did this ship (as well as several others) is David Hobbins who did the Gurdians of the Galaxy ships and is currently working on the new Star Wars movies doing concept work for them.

and again, oh shit, they are also sold out of the $2500 javelin packages which is just nuts. But, one of the dudes in my org is a private investor of some kind and apparently doesn't worry about money and he's got one, so, i guess there are people out there buying these things.

well, the $20 game packages didn't help anyone out here since the sold out so quickly. shame.anyway, here's an image showing side-by-side ship comparrisons. this is not all of the ships, a quarter of them aren't shown here becuase the models aren't done. the biggest ships, the capital ships are not shown. (frigate, corvette, destroyer, carrier)
the 3 largest ships shown (right to left) are a salvage vessel, a luxury yacht, and an exploration ship.
all of these are playable ships. some are 1 man ships, some are 2 man. the rest are 2+ crew up to ten.
oh yeah, and the bigger ships come with landing bays with smaller ships stuffed inside.
