Non-shtick/troll answer: it looks like a mid-tier country. Better than, say, Africa but not as nice as the Western world. Probably about on par with living in Central America.
There probably are nice areas outside of the squalor, like gated communities and beautiful countryside. Matt does not live in or near these areas.

Central America is by far the most violent region on earth. More violent than countries that are currently at war. China might be lacking in a lot a things, but squallor is better than being murdered.

I thought South Africa was the world's crime capital. But I guess the Chinese are pretty big on the whole law and order thing.

> There has to be some nice parts to live in the country, right?
Hong Kong is China and its terrific and famous for its food and culture but of course it only became China proper recently. Sister Chan TC Mod On born in Hong Kong when one chats with in IRC is very different from what you see as a Mod at TC and you can get great incites on current issues in Hong Kong. It is a super expensive city to live in. Shanghai is beyond over populated and maybe just my bad luck because on about 8 visits there on business the Smog was horrid and a quick look up and its listed "low compared to other Chinese cities, but still substantial by world standards"
Last trip there and people were wearing masks to be outdoors. Beijing all remember from news during Olympics - Gov shut down industry for Olympics and turned off a lot of coal burning power plants so we watching the games wood see Beijing at its best. Beijing wood be a terrific city if not for the horrid air. Paraphrased and could look up the quote from a member of MC
Member of MC got TB in Beijing - this is a common problem in much of Asia and Russia - They have not been bright enough as countries to stop it as much of the rest of the planet has. On recovery Member of MC was told Beijing air was not compatible with Members damaged lungs.
Odd thing about that is - Kunming China is listed as China's 3rd worst city for Air quality.
Visiting China - It is an amazing country IF one stays away from the industrialized cities. On business I found that impossible.
Lists of the best cities to visit or live in China and there are many lists - First is a list of 2nd Tier cities to live in for those who retire to China from elsewhere
One can find a list of the top 1000 places to visit in China. I am still a bit clueless why on Earth expats who have choices of where to work in China end up in 5th-7th tier cities. So far the best reply about Kunming for instance is - Ultra cheep to live if an alcoholic - Nor have I researched this - I just assume Booze all over China wood be totally inexpensive. So the answer expats give about why Kunming fails a quality answer so far.
They do say the other best thing about the place is easy access to Viet Nam Cambodia and all parts close to the border.

Crime as a whole, maybe. But El Salvador, Guatemala and so on are unbeatable in violence. CA has the highest murder rates in the world by far, SA can't even compete.
