scramble up an egg and dip 2 slices of bread in there covering it completely. toss it in a pan with a little melted butter (or margerine) and cook them up
in another pan fry up 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of turkey till they are browned and crispy on the edges.
by now the bread should be cooked up, remove them from the skillet and layer on the fried ham and turkey, add a slice of swiss cheese and a slice of sharp cheddar.
on the "top" slice of bread slather on some maple syrup like you would mustard and then add it to the rest of the sandwich.
if you like super melted cheese then build the sandwich while it's on the skillet and flip it over a time or two until the cheese is extra melted.
for a splash of color dash on a little powdered sugar and if you like a side dish of raspberry preserves for dipping (or in lieu of the maple syrup.)

I'm going to make this for my kids, and if they don't like it I'm holding you personally responsible. You'll get a stern post directed at you.

i normally use thinly sliced lunch meat from a package and plain white bread. it's pretty good that way but for me i usually go for wheat bread.
also you can't go wrong with the maple syrup, as much or as little as you want. i like it to drip.

oh yeah, and totally cut the syrup if you're wanting more savory and less sweet. i've never tried it with any regular sandwich condiments but it'd probably be good with mayo and mustard too. without condiments it's good too, but dry.

i tried it today, it was pretty alright. Though I actually think I prefer regular grilled cheese if you're going to be doing cheese, I'm used to french toast just being pure sweet

my original goal was to make a bennigan's type monte cristo, but i don't have a deep fat fryer and not much cooking skill. Those things were batter dipped, wrapped, frozen, and sent to the restaurants in boxes. we'd pop them out of the freezer, drop them in the fryer, and 10 minutes later you'd have a delicious and sweet ham and turkey and cheese sandwich with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry preserves. ultimately the French Bread sandwich is an attempt to capture that sandwich with easier preparation.
but you're right, with the maple syrup probably the sharp cheddar takes away from the sweetness. i would say maybe try american cheese instead or maybe just all swiss. swiss goes great with sweet. and be sure to use plenty of ham, what i showed cooking was half of what i made, and i like to use honey ham and honey turkey for a little bit of continuity. also honey as a topping is really good too but i prefer maple syrup with the flavor of french toast.
Glad you tried it, next time i make Sriracha Honey Buffalo Wings i'll post the recipe. they are absolutely delicious.

It was a fun experiment! You have a good (and very american) taste in food!
